— Janesville Craig High’s girls volleyball team finished seventh in Saturday’s Big Eight Conference Tournament at Madison La Follette.

The Cougars finished 2-3 in the tournament, including victories over crosstown rival Janesville Parker and Madison East. Parker High lost all five of its matches and finished 10th.

Madison Memorial defeated Madison West in three games to win the conference title.

“We played well at times,” Craig coach Blake Budrow said. “There are some really good teams in our conference, and we were able to stay close to them in a couple of games but just couldn’t finish.

“Ally Zimmerman did a fantastic job of serving for us. She had eight aces and had a 97-percent serving stat. And Jillynn Mortensen played very well at libero for us.”

Parker’s long day left the Vikings with a 6-27 overall record.

“We were very inconsistent,” Parker head coach Dave Lehmann said.

The Vikings’ Lindsay Hoff did rack up 34 digs in the five matches.

“She had a great day playing defense,” Lehmann said.

Craig opens up WIAA Division 1 tournament action with a regional game at Verona on Thursday night. The Vikings will start the tournament trail Thursday night with a 7 p..m. match at Oregon.
