— Walworth Big Foot/Williams Bay’s Caroline Starck, unbeaten all year, showed why she’s the dominant singles player in Division 2 tennis on Friday.

Starck (34-0) won both of her matches by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores to earn a spot in today’s semifinals of the WIAA State Tennis Meet, keeping her bid for a third straight state title alive.

“We talked about peaking at the end of the year,” Big Foot coach Jim Karedes said. “She’s playing the best tennis of her life. Incredible is an understatement. She’s playing some great tennis.”

Starck put away University School of Milwaukee’s Sarah Wiener (5-4) and Unity/Luck’s Stephanie Koltnow (19-1).

Starck will face Kenosha St. Joseph’s Amanda Dick (20-1) in today’s semifinals.

“Caroline went out there with focus, like she had a job to do,” Karedes said. “She just brought a little more to the court than the other girls had. They played as good as they can. Those were good matches to get her ready for (today).”

Jefferson’s Beth Ganser (26-3) also reached the Division 2 semifinals, knocking off Saint Mary Central’s Rachel Brown (19-12), 6-2, 6-2, and Saint Thomas More’s Chantel Newman (20-2), 6-4, 6-3.

Ganser, seeded No. 2, will face third-seeded Appleton Xavier’s Rachel Vrabec (26-1) in the other Division2 semifinal. Ganser reached last year’s title match before losing to Starck. Vrabec eliminated Big Foot’s Julie Kolnik (27-4), 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in the round of 16.

Karedes said Starck has no preference about her potential opponent in the title match.

“If Beth wins, we know what we can do against her,” Karedes said. “If Rachel Vrabec wins, it’s a different girl for Caroline to face.”

In D1 singles, Mequon Homestead’s Carolyn Peck (34-2) eliminated Fort Atkinson’s Leah Dahl (25-2), 6-4, 6-3.
