Sun Prairie outlasts West

Carl Huemmer had Sun Prairie High football fans humming in enjoyment Friday night.


Huemmer ran for three touchdowns, including the game-winner with 6:12 left in the fourth quarter to give the Cardinals a 28-21 victory over Madison West in Big Eight Conference action.


Sun Prairie improved to 5-2, while West fell to 4-3.


The game featured a showdown between two great backs.


The Regents’ Leighton Settle rushed 30 times for 218 yards. Settle scored on runs of 17, 29 and 14 yards, but on West’s final drive, Sun Prairie’s Harlow Hermanson stripped the ball from Settle and recovered it at the Cardinal 24.


Sun Prairie then ran out the remaining 90 seconds.


Huemmer finished with 193 yards on 33 carries.

Braga had touchdown runs of 19, 69, 19 and 6 yards enroute to gaining 158 yards on 13 carries.


Memorial had a three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 3-4.
