— UW-Rock County’s quest for the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference men’s soccer tournament championship was dashed with a 2-1 loss to UW-Fox Valley on Saturday.

Fox Valley’s Joe Dexler scored the winning goal at the 66-minute mark on a rebound off a free kick, which led to the Rattlers first loss of the season. The Rattlers had tied and defeated Fox Valley, 3-1, during the regular season.

“It hit our wall of defenders and Joe Drexler was able to tap it in on the rebound,” UW-Rock coach Grant McNall said. “Dominic (Amato) was committed to the right and it rebounded off the wall.’’

The Rattlers won the WCC title in 2005.

“Sometimes the pressure of an undefeated season kind of gets to you,” McNall said.

Janesville Parker High graduate Mike Strieker scored at 14 minutes to give the Rattlers a 1-0 lead. Fox Valley’s Grant Larie tied at 37 minutes.

“It was by no means a one-sided game,” McNall said, citing Strieker being denied on a point-blank kick and teammate Miliano Aguilar putting a shot through goalkeeper Keegan Bolstad’s legs, only to have Bolstad recover in time.

The Rattlers (12-1-1) will turn their attention to the Wisconsin Junior Collegiate Athletic Association tournament semifinal at Madison Area Technical College on Wednesday.

The winner will face UW-Fox Valley, which earned an automatic berth into the WJCAA championship game with its victory over UW-Rock.
