— Janesville Craig High School rolled into the WIAA Division 1 girls tennis sectional at Lake Geneva Badger by posting a subsectional-leading 18 points Monday at Janesville’s Palmer Park.

The Cougars couldn’t keep the momentum going Wednesday and did not advance any of their sectional-qualifying doubles teams or Flight 2 singles qualifier Nicole Timblin for next week’s individual state tournament at Nielsen Stadium in Madison.

However, it was a brighter story for area sectional qualifiers.

Milton’s Lizzie Malzfeldt and Katelyn Ludeking advanced to state as Flight 1 doubles champions by beating Madison La Follette’s Rebecca Mixtacki and Rennee Nelson, 6-3, 6-3.

Fort Atkinson’s Leah Dahl won the Flight 1 singles championship with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Burlington’s Stephanie Londre.

The top four in Flight 1 singles and doubles qualify for state, along with Flight 2 champions.

Madison East advanced to the Oct. 24-25 state team tournament by winning the sectional championship with 45 points, giving the Purgolders an 11-point advantage over runner-up Fort Atkinson. Craig finished with 20 points, while Milton had 16 and Janesville Parker scored 12.

“We hoped we would do something,” Craig coach Camilla Owen said. “We played tough at first, but we couldn’t hang in there.’’

Craig’s Hailey Smith and Taylor Storbakken lost their Flight 1 quarterfinal match to Malzfeldt and Ludeking, 7-6 (3), 6-2.

In Flight 2 doubles, Craig’s Olivia Ehlers and Emily Reshower lost to Madison La Follette’s Calli Haag and Hannah Martin, 6-3, 6-1, in the semifinals.

Craig’s Maggie Bolton and Lauden Rezai lost their Flight 3 doubles title match to Badger’s Sophie Dixon and Jen Nielsen, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-1.

Timblin lost 6-0, 6-0 to eventual Flight 2 champion Paige Schaefer of Madison East in the semfiinals.

Parker’s Lauren Brooks lost to East’s Jessie Rogers, 6-0, 6-0, in a Flight 3 singles semifinal.

Mixtacki and Nelson defeated Parker’s Maddie Theisen and Kristen Zeilinger, 6-1, 6-4 in a Flight 1 quarterfinal match
