Apartment dwellers in Beloit are asking the city to change an ordinance and increase the number of animals allowed in multi-family buildings.

Assistant City Manager Steve Gregg says single family homes are currently allowed ten pets, and multi-family homes like apartments and condos are allowed three. He says the standard number in Wisconsin's major cities is five. Gregg says there are some nuances. No more than three animals can be dogs and no more than three can be cats. The city would keep track of the animals through licensing. Households with more than five as allowed under the current code would be grandfathered in, but if a pet passes away they can't replace it if it exceeds the limit. The City Council considers it Monday.
