— United Way of North Rock County has raised $550,853—about 41 percent—of its $1.35 million goal, according to a United Way press release.

Since the campaign kicked off in mid-September, employee workplace campaigns have started or finished at more than 200 companies throughout north Rock County. Workplace campaigns collect nearly 70 percent of dollars raised.

Twelve companies recently reported increases over last year's results: Angus Young Associates, Bank of Milton/Bank of Edgerton, Catholic Charities, Feingold & Read, Janesville Sand & Gravel, Kitson & Gaffney, M&I Bank, Nowlan & Mouat, Panoramic, Roethe Krohn Pope LLP, Save-A-Lot Foods and Seneca Foods, according to the press release.

Another two dozen companies have run campaigns or are finishing them this month. New workplace campaigns were conducted at CRT Processing and United Alloy.

A penny war at the Rock County Job Center raised about $2,000 while Fagan Chevrolet raised more than $1,000 with special events. The two Culver's restaurants in Janesville raised $400 during "Scoopie Spirit Nights" when a portion of sales was donated to United Way.

Elsewhere, M&I Bank raised almost $1,000 with a Denim Day plus another $680 with a gift basket fundraiser. Bank employees are planning another fundraiser later this month.

Another campaign effort involved a group of local volunteers acting as "phone uniters," calling 200 area businesses that have not given to United Way in the past. Contributions are coming in from these calls now.
