Rock County Historical Society makes case for Tallman House

The Lincoln Tallman house is the top item citizens want to talk about when it comes to the Janesville city budget.

2009 marks the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. Representatives from the Rock County Historical Society told the city council that event could bring in tourism dollars to Janesville, but the event might not reach its full potential if the city council reduces the subsidy to the Tallman house.

The Tallman house is the only private residence still standing in Wisconsin where Lincoln once stayed. Therefore, it's been selected by a committee appointed by the governor as one of three sites holding celebrations to commemorate Lincoln's 200th anniversary.

The council is proposing to substantially cut its subsidy to the site in the 2009 budget. The council votes on the budget November 24.
