— As a wife, mother and grandmother of veterans, Buneva Deuel is no stranger to veterans and their issues.

Her husband, Lamar Deuel Sr., is past commander of the local VFW.

Her son Lamar Deuel Jr. is current commander of the VFW.

Her grandson Sgt. Cody Leggs was killed in Iraq earlier this year.

She is president of VFW Kienow-Hilt Post 1621 Auxiliary and will be the featured speaker at Janesville’s Veterans Day ceremony Tuesday. Her topic: “What Veterans Mean to Her.’’

The United States has about 17 million surviving war veterans but loses veterans—particularly those who served in World War II and the Korean War—at a rate of 1,700 per day, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Janesville’s program begins at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday near the Traxler Park warming house. Damage to Veterans Plaza from summer flooding still is being repaired.

Vocalist Brian Hansen will sing the National Anthem and “God Bless America.”

The service, organized by the Janesville Patriotic Society, will include a salute to the five branches of the U.S. military and presentation of service flags.

Warming House doors open at 9 a.m., when members of the Vietnam Veterans of America Associates Chapter 236 will serve coffee and doughnuts.

The American Legion Post and VFW Auxiliary members will serve a chili lunch in the warming house after the ceremony.

God (and so do I) loves our selfless military personnel and their families!!!

It's wild that you mention the Pearl Harbor Survivors. I met one in April taking the train from Harvard, IL to Chicago. It was the greatest thing I have ever experienced in my life. I was VERY humbled by the experience... to be able to speak with a survivor of the USS Arizona!!

As it happens, I was at the DMV looking at the specialty license plates, including one for Pearl Harbor Survivors. I wonder how many Wisconsin has left.
