— Con-way Freight is closing its Janesville terminal and 39 others to streamline operations and save as much as $40 million annually.

In Janesville, the Nov. 17 closing of the Con-Way operation at 1321 W. Avalon Road will result in the elimination of 44 jobs.

Local employees will have the opportunity to transfer to a Con-way operation in Rockford or a different system in the company’s network.

Con-way Freight is a less-than-truckload carrier that combines smaller freight loads from a variety of shippers in each truck.

“In study after study, customers have told us the service attributes most important to their business are exception-free delivery, reliable on-time service and fast transit times,” John G. Labrie, president of Con-way Freight, said in a news release. “The prime objective of this effort was to create improvement opportunities in all three service performance factors, and to identify areas where we could reduce costs and gain efficiencies through better process design and asset deployment.”

Con-way Freight plans to cut 40 service centers and to redistribute their freight to other centers.

When the closures are complete in December, Con-Way will have 303 service centers in the United States and Canada supported by 70 freight assembly centers.

Labrie said the company will improve service without leaving any markets.

“Every customer and every community that receives direct service today from Con-way Freight will continue to receive direct service when our network change is complete,” he said.

The 40 centers that will close are generally smaller locations. More than 75 percent of affected employees at closing locations will have the opportunity to follow work to a new operating location.

Severance packages and career counseling assistance will be provided to those employees who are unable to remain with the company.

Company spokesman Gary Frantz emphasized the company is not eliminating any services in Janesville. The only difference is that the service will originate in Rockford.

tippybites, it could be any of the department stores (none of which is actually a big box store -- that applies to e.g. Home Depot). The entire department store sector is in free-fall as credit card spending is curtailed (voluntarily or not) by consumers and home equity lines of credit disappear.
.
Even Kohl's, which is one of the better-performing stores in its sector, had a steep drop in sales last quarter. All those retailers are going to have to look closely at their store inventory as the recession deepens.

I'm not a trucker, but i do respect what they do. i have also heard this one. " If you have it, a trucker delivered it". Think about that when you go buy anything. Your an idiot for bashing these honorable people who work long hours to deliver our goods

Hey Joker, do you know which "Big Box" store will be leaving? That is sad to hear. If I were to take 3 guesses it would be one of these 3 ~~JCPenney, Sears or Boston's. Sorry to go off topic. My thoughts & well wishes go to the employees & families here. I hope the "change" everyone voted for takes place sooner rather than later for our country.

It is sad for me to see this facility close. I built the offices there when my brother's company bought the building and leased it to them.

Whysbead, if you beleive that, then you need to get a life and a dose of reality. Are you related to that goofy woman on youtube who said that Obabma will pay for her gas and her mortgage?

Janesville is in deep trouble. Again, you heard it hear first. Major box store will be leaving the Janesville Mall after Christmas season and this will start the demise of the mall. Sad but true.

Pablo...have you ever dealt with ANY of the drivers at CCX???? I don't mean passing them on the I system and then cutting in front of them either.

I do on a daily basis and can say these guys and gals bust thier arses to get the stuff you need to the places it needs to be, on time.

Blaming this on any political figure is really grapsing for straws. LTL freight volume is down in America right now. No freight = fewer servicing depots needed to serve the customer. Companies can't afford to keep EVERYONE employed. They do not "owe" them jobs.

Lynda That's not ignoring someone when your posting to them. You seem obsessed. Not even commenting on the story. his comment is relevent. that's the thinking of a lot of people. O bama is going to harm companies and people will continue to have to find new jobs. People voted looking for a hand out. Companies will have to go lean to survive the new tax invasion.

pablo- get a life! The drivers don't deserve this bashing. They are out of work. Red Sovine sums this up best... in a "truck drivers prayer". Yes, there are some "wild" ones, but MOST are just making a living, and enjoying doing it. MOST Truckers are the MOST friendliest, kind, and considerate people you can meet. Good Luck to ALL with this ANOTHER, layoff. Stay safe! Here are the words to Red Sovine's song, a truck driver's prayer.

Truck Driver's Prayer
From a song by Red Sovine

Dear God above,
bless this truck I drive,
and help me keep someone alive.
Be my mortal sight this day,
on streets where little children play.

Bless my helper fast asleep,
when the night is long and deep,
and keep my cargo safe and sound
through the hours big and round.

Make my judgement sound as steel,
be my hands upon the wheel,
bless the traveller goin' past,
and teach him not to go so fast.

Give me strength for every trip,
so I may care for what they ship,
And make me mindful every mile;
that life is just........
a little while.
Amen.

If you deal with truck drivers every day, you will know what this means. If you don't... you have no reason to bash.
Sorry this is Sooooooo long, but these drivers need to be appreciated!!

Does that mean that when it snows they won't go blowing by me on the interstate only to find them jack-knifed a few miles up like what happened on at least 2 occasions last winter?
