— A former town of Delavan police chief spent Thursday night in the Walworth County Jail.

Andrew W. Mayer, 67, of 2217 Landings Lane, Delavan, was arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated, carrying a concealed weapon and carrying a weapon while intoxicated. Mayer was arrested by town of Geneva police. He was booked into the jail at 8:18 p.m.

He was released Friday on a $1,500 signature bond, according to the Walworth County District Attorney’s Office.

The district attorney’s office is reviewing the case, and a criminal complaint has not been filed.

Mayer served as police chief from 1999 to October 2007, when he was fired by the town’s police and fire commission. Mayer said he thought his firing was politically motivated.

Mayer ran for a spot in the town board in April and was defeated.
