Clinton Fire officials do not yet know how a fire started in a basement at 10600 East County Trunk P.

Fire Chief John Rindfleisch says the single-story home is too unstable for his department to investigate the cause of the fire. A Clinton firefighter arrived with police to find flames and smoke coming out of the front door of the house. He says 11 other fire departments assisted during the six hours firefighters battled the flames. Two other departments had to turn down the call for help because they didn't have enough firefighters available. Rindfleisch says Friday afternoons are the worst time for fires due to personnel shortages.

No damage estimate is yet available, although Rindfleisch says the home is about 50 percent destroyed by the fire.

The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire, but several dogs are believed to have perished.
