Area players fall in state tennis
Jefferson High senior Tim Schuld gained a win with two sets and a tiebreaker in Division 2 singles at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The exrtra qualifier defeated Brown Deer junior Demetrius Johnson, 6-3, 2-6, 12-10.
Schuld (21-3) was to go against top-seeded Milwaukee University School junior Nick Buckley (10-6) in today’s second round.
Big Foot/Williams Bay senior Spencer Lynch (19-7), the area’s only automatic qualifier in Division 2 singles, suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Brookfield Academy senior John McGowan.
Jefferson junior Lee Olson (19-5) and Edgerton senior Joe Kronforst (16-5) earned return trips to state as extra qualifiers in Division 2 singles, but both bowed out in the first round. Milwaukee University School senior Sanjay Hariharan (26-2) notched a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Olson, and La Crosse Aquinas junior Bob Steingraeber (14-5) got a 2-0, 2-0 win over Kronforst on a walkover.
Edgerton juniors Ben Fuder and Chad Prater (17-6), who earned an automatic berth in Division 2 doubles, dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision to extra qualifiers Christopher Jumes and Cameron Fiebig (18-2) of Appleton Xavier.
As extra qualifiers in Division 2 doubles, Edgerton juniors Brek Perry and Tyler Marx (21-2) fell to New Berlin Eisenhower juniors Matthew Dustrude and Mark Fleming (9-1), 6-0, 6-2.
Big Foot/Williams Bay’s senior doubles team of Ryan Fahrnow and Kyual Cribben (12-6) lost to junior John Chamberlain and sophomore Jake Miller (9-6) of Shorewood, 6-1, 7-6 (3), in Division 2.
Lake Geneva Badger senior Alex Groth (20-4), an automatic qualifier in Division 1 singles, dropped a hard-fought decision to Mequon Homestead junior Cameron Mickelson (13-4), an extra qualifier, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-8.
Elkhorn senior Jorge Ruiz (12-3) lost 6-4, 7-5 to Manitowoc senior Ethan Kadow in a Division 1 singles battle of extra qualifiers.
Milton juniors Tyler Banh and Riley Bailey (17-4) lost 6-0, 6-1 to senior Trevor Sorenson and junior Zach Graham (24-5) of Stevens Point in a battle of extra qualifiers for Division 1 doubles.
Junior Augie Geldermann and senior Dillon Gaddi (17-4), Badger’s automatic qualifiers in Division 1 doubles, lost 6-3, 7-5 to Eau Claire Memorial seniors Ryan Falch and Jeff Liegel (24-3).
Today’s action will carry the tournament through the quarterfinals. Semifinals and finals are Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m., with championship matches scheduled for 2 p.m.
