Edgerton sends two golfers to state
Edgerton High’s golf team didn’t earn a berth in the WIAA Division 2 boys state tournament next Monday and Tuesday at University Ridge in Madison, but the news was far from all bad for the Rock Valley and Monroe Regional champions.
Crimson Tide senior Mike Hesselman and sophomore teammate Dan Ozga finished among the top three individuals at the Mayville Sectional on Wednesday to earn state berths.
Madison Edgewood (325) and McFarland (333) became the team state qualifiers. Edgerton tied Platteville for third, each carding a 335 at the Mayville Golf Course.
Hesselman, a senior, fired a 3-over-par 75 to earn his second straight trip to state. Ozga carded a 4-over 76 to gain his first state berth.
“Both kids have a real solid short game,” Edgerton coach Ken Haagensen said. “Both kids can boom them out there, but they both can handle the putting.’’
Hesselman went 39-36 in the 18-hole sectional. Ozga, who opened with a double-bogey, went 40-36.
McFarland’s Logan Kranz carded a 1-under-par 71 for medalist honors.
Jamie Peierson of Brodhead and Kyle Freeman of Beloit Turner, competing unattached, shot 86 and 90, respectively.
