— The Rock County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the woman killed in the Wednesday morning car accident east of Beloit.

Katherine R. Fernihough, 22, Beloit, died after she was thrown from the vehicle driven by Richard K. Bennett, 23, of 3103 Mount Zion Ave. Bennett is in custody at the Rock County Jail and will appear in court at 4 p.m. today.

Emergency workers found Fernihough lying 10 feet from the car in a ditch in the 1800 block of South Turtle Town Hall Road at 2:28 a.m. Wednesday.

She suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene by Rock County Deputy Corner Erica Nenno.

Bennett was driving south on South Turtle Town Hall Road when he lost control of his 2000 Buick Century. His car entered the east ditch line, careened off a tree and came to a stop about 150 feet from the tree, according to the sheriff’s office.

Bennett was arrested on a charge of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle after he was taken to Beloit Memorial Hospital for nonlifethreatening injuries.

when they say this article was written by gazette staff, does that mean the custodian wrote the article?

Just wonder why no name is attached to some articles.

What the article doesn't say is whether or not she had been drinking too, and she got in the CAR with someone that was drinking!!! There is no FAULT here, she made a choice to get in the vehicle. That being said, this most definately was an accident. Should he be punished for drinking and driving? Absolutely!

It shows that human beings that kill other human beings need to be held accountable so that others do not feel free to do so

Same with reckless drivers, one does not have to be "under the influence" to kill with the wheeled weapon.
