— One person is dead and a Janesville man has been arrested on a charge of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle after an accident this morning east of Beloit.

Authorities reported finding a woman lying about 10 feet from a car in the ditch in the 1800 block of South Turtle Town Hall Road at 2:28 a.m.

She had suffered severe head trauma, according to a news release from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office.

Rock County Deputy Coroner Erica Nenno pronounced the woman dead at the scene. The identity of the woman was being withheld this morning pending notification of her family.

Preliminary investigation shows Richard K. Bennett, 23, of 3103 Mt. Zion Road, Janesville, was traveling south on South Turtle Town Hall Road when he lost control of his 2000 Buick Century. His car entered the east ditch line, careened off a tree and finally came to a stop about 150 feet from the tree, according to the sheriff’s department.

The woman was thrown from the vehicle.

Bennett was transported to Beloit Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. While at the hospital, Rock County deputies arrested Bennett on a charge of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle.

Alcohol and the vehicle’s speed are thought to be contributing factors in the accident. The car’s airbags deployed, but neither person was wearing a seat belt.

Bennett is in the Rock County Jail awaiting his initial court appearance.
