— Two people were injured seriously early Saturday afternoon when their pickup truck crashed into a tree.

Mersadies R. Stewart, 15, Janesville, was driving when the pickup truck ran off the road on a curve and head-on into a large tree at 3307 Orfordville-Hanover Road in Plymouth Township at 1:53 p.m., the Rock County Sheriff’s Office reported.

A REACT helicopter flew Stewart to Rockford Memorial Hospital, where she was treated for multiple injuries, sheriff’s deputies reported, adding that her condition was unknown.

The truck’s owner—Matthew R. Trezek, 19, Janesville—was riding with Stewart. He was taken to Mercy Hospital in Janesville and treated for a broken leg and internal injuries and was in stable condition, deputies reported.

Stewart does not have a driver’s license or learner’s permit, and Stewart and Trezek were not wearing seatbelts, the sheriff’s office reported.

Both the driver and passenger airbags deployed. Deputies think speed and driver inexperience were factors in the crash.

Deputies anticipate issuing several tickets to both the driver and passenger, according to the press release.
