Itís slim pickings for extra state qualifiers in WIAA track and field competition.

Shea Sweeney, an Edgerton High junior pole vaulter, is the only extra qualifier from the immediate area in any boys or girls division. Sweeney beat the 9-foot-9 qualifying standard for Division 2 by reaching 10 feet with a fifth-place finish for the Crimson Tide on Thursday in the Boscobel Sectional.

The top four finishers for each sectional event in Divisions 2, 3 and 4 earned automatic state berths. It was the top three in Division 1. Those whose sectional performances rank among the eight best in all sectionals for their division become extra qualifiers.

The only other area extra qualifier is the Lakeside Lutheran girls 400-meter relay team of Stefanie Gronholz, Alex Anton, Brooke Hinstorff and Kayla Ridgeman. The Warriors placed fifth with a 50.74 time in the Division 2 sectional at Kewaskum.

The Division 1 sectional at Burlington, which included the Janesville schools, has no extra qualifiers. Overall, only Division 2 girls (with nine) has more than six extra qualifiers throughout the state.

The two-day state meet begins next Friday at UW-La Crosse.
