Craig, Milton advance to regional soccer finals

— Janesville Craig High School skipped past Elkhorn, 2-1, in a girls soccer Division 1 WIAA regional semifinal here Thursday.

Craig defeated Elkhorn, 3-1, in a nonconference game during the regular season.


“They knew how to defend us, and we knew how to defend them,” Craig coach Bill McCabe said. “They have great speed up top.’’


Megan Lindgren scored near the eight-minute mark with an assist from Mari Hosseini to put Craig in the lead, 1-0. Kristy Benson put Craig ahead 2-0 at 44:55 with an assist from Emma Fashing.


Sammi Rogers scored Elkhorn’s goal at 52:45 with an assist from Kori Plucinski.


“Elkhorn kept on coming at us,” McCabe said.


Craig goalkeeper Sophia Sanchez made four saves. Elkhorn keeper Michelle Martinez made 10 saves.


The Cougars (7-12-1) travel to Milton for a regional final at 5 p.m. Saturday.

n Milton 10, Burlington 0—The co-champions of the Southern Lakes Conference breezed into Saturday’s Division 1 regional title match with Janesville Craig at 5 p.m. this Saturday at Milton.


Milton (14-2-2) held an 8-0 lead in the first half.


Katy Behrens scored the first of her three first-half goals 40 seconds into the game. Amber Davis and Emily Arnold scored two goals each and Ashley Roherty added a goal in the first half for Milton.
