— WHITEWATER—

Edgerton senior Joe Kronforst and Jefferson junior Lee Olson fell short here Wednesday in their bids to return to the WIAA Division 2 boys state tennis tournament, but it wasn’t a shutout for area schools in the Whitewater Sectional.

While the two Flight 1 singles players fell in the quarterfinals, Walworth Big Foot/Williams Bay senior Spencer Lynch (19-6) earned a state berth with a third-place finish in that flight.

Edgerton also qualified its Flight 1 doubles team of Ben Fuder and Chad Prater (17-5) with a four-place finish.

Madison Edgewood dominated the sectional with 42 points to gain a berth in the state team tournament. The Crusaders also qualified Flight 1 singles champion Jack Cullen (20-4) and two sectional champion doubles teams for the state individual tournament.

Lynch locked up his state berth with a 6-3, 6-2 quarterfinal win over Portage junior Chris Zimmerman. After a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 loss to eventual runner-up Matthew Belio of Fond du Lac Springs in the semifinals, the Southern Lakes Conference runner-up defeated Watertown Luther Prep junior Scott Henrich, 6-2, 6-3, in the third-place match.

Fuder and Prater, both juniors, qualified with a 6-1, 6-0 quarterfinal win over Hartland University Lake juniors Mark Ditkof and Preston Haas in the quarterfinals. The Crimson Tide team lost to eventual runners-up Derek Bruesch and Peter Winterhack of Waupun in the semifinals.

Edgerton barely missed qualifying its previously unbeaten Flight 2 doubles team of Brek Perry and Tyler Marx (21-1). The Tide juniors knocked off Parker Phillips and Mason Klein of St. John’s Northwestern, 6-3, 6-0, before losing the championship match to Edgewood’s Patrick Lagman and Danny Meicher, 6-4, 6-3.

Kronforst, who battled back this spring from knee injury that sidelined him the entire basketball season, dropped a 6-1, 7-6 decision to Belio in the quarterfinals. That left Kronforst with a 16-4 record after reaching the second round of last year’s state tournament.

Olson, who also advanced to last year’s second round at state, fell to 20-4 for the season with a 7-5, 6-3 loss to Henrich.

The sectional’s top four Flight 1 singles and doubles players and Flight 2 champions will compete next weekend at Nielsen Stadium in Madison. The state meet’s first-round matches are Thursday.

The state team tournament is June 6-7, also at Nielsen.
