— Janesville Craig High School’s boys golf team knows it’s time to step up or go home.

Charlie Roherty fired a par 72 for medalist honors to lead Craig to a 310 team total and second place in the WIAA Division 1 regional tournament Tuesday at Oak Ridge.

“As a team, we’ve come on at the end of the year,” Roherty said. “We know it’s do or die.’’

Regional champion Elkhorn (308), Craig, Beloit Memorial (315) and Lake Geneva Badger (316) advance to the Elkhorn Sectional at Evergreen next Tuesday. Fort Atkinson’s Evan Wartgow (77), Janesville Parker’s Andrew Tearman (79) and Milton’s Zach Fry (79) advance as individuals.

The sectional’s top two teams and top three individuals qualify for the June 4-5 state tournament at University Ridge in Madison.

Mike Tabbert backed up Roherty with a 78 for Craig, while Greg Ruef shot a 79 and Mike Hainstock had an 81.

Drew Liner shot a 73 and Jordan Lockhart had a 75 to lead the title surge for Elkhorn, which is shooting for its second Division 1 state appearance in three years.

Craig is attempting to earn a state berth for the second consecutive season and third time in four years.

“We’ve been practicing more,” said Roherty, a senior who is seeking his third trip to state. “It seems with the better weather, we have been getting in a good groove.’’

Roherty said his short game was key to his success at Oak Ridge.

“The greens are pretty tough,” Roherty said. “The greens are crowned, and it’s tough to

land on the greens. I had under 28 putts.’’
