— Solid pitching from Trevor Foss and some timely two-out hits were all Janesville Craig High School’s baseball team needed to continue its hot streak at the end of the regular season.

Foss threw a complete-game seven-hitter and struck out 13 in a 4-2 victory here Tuesday over host Madison La Follette in the Cougars’ final Big Eight Conference game.

Craig (12-8, 9-7) won six of its last seven games going into the tournament. The Cougars play the winner of the Milton-Oconomowoc regional opener on Friday, May 30, at Riverside Park.

Craig trailed 1-0 when it scored three times in the third inning. With two outs, Kaleb Eichman singled and Dylan Grall was hit by a pitch. Kyle Knott then dumped a hit in right-center field that went for a two-run double. Derek Mussey then delivered an RBI single.

“That was huge,” Craig coach Victor Herbst said. “Bing, bing, bing, we had three runs across.”

Another two-out rally in the fourth resulted in Craig’s fourth run. Foss was hit by a pitch, and Ben Olin came in as a courtesy runner. Olin stole second and scored on Ben Yaucher’s double.

Foss made those two-out hits stand up.

“He was throwing with good velocity,” Herbst said. “His breaking ball was working well. When he can throw that for strikes, as hard as he throws, it makes it a tough adjustment for hitters.”

Herbst likes the way the Cougars have come on late in the year.

“We’re peaking at the right time,” he said. “We’re playing our best baseball. Our defense has really been solid. We’re not giving up any runs right now.”
