Whitewater baseball team wins NCAA opener

OSHKOSH — Kevin Zalnis smacked two homers and drove in five runs to pace UW-Whitewater to a 7-4 victory over St. Scholastica in the opening round of the double-elimination NCAA Division III regional baseball tournament here Wednesday.

The Warhawks (36-8) advance to the winner’s bracket to face Carthage College (35-8) of Kenosha at 4 p.m. today.

Zalnis, who hit a solo homer in the third, ripped a three-run homer in the seventh—his 16th of the season—to give the Warhawks the lead for good at 6-4. Whitewater’s Cory Trepanier smacked a pinch-hit solo homer in the eighth for the final outcome.

St. Scholastica scored four runs on four hits, including a three-run homer for a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning.

Whitewater reliever Gregg Reik stopped St. Scholastica on no hits through the final 2 1/3 innings for the victory. Aaron Dott, the Warhawks’ starting pitcher, allowed four runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings. Dott notched nine strikeouts and walked one.
