— Not even a lingering foot injury could keep Shelby Demos from another dominating track and field performance Tuesday night.

The Janesville Parker High School junior won three events in the Big Eight Conference meet for the second straight year.

Demos’ three victories equaled the win-total of all other Janesville athletes. Parker’s Riley Grafft won the high jump for the second straight year, while teammate Cody Speaker soared to victory in the pole vault. JoJo Pregont was the only winner for either Janesville Craig team as the junior captured the long jump.

The team races went as expected. Madison La Follette easily won the boys title with 195.5 points. Middleton ran away with the girls title with 156.5 as the two dual-meet champions made it a clean sweep.

Parker finished third in both the boys and girls competition, while Craig was sixth in the boys and eighth in the girls.

Demos has been battling a chronic foot problem that has limited her participation at a number of meets. Nobody would have known it Tuesday night.

Despite a brutally strong wind blowing in her face. along with a heavily-taped right ankle, Demos won the 100 high hurdles and the 300 low hurdles. She later added the high jump title after clearing 5-2 before shutting it down for the night.

“I’m going to a chiropractor/wellness doctor, and it seems to be working the best for my foot out of everything I’ve tried,” Demos said. “It’s basically a combination of things that’s causing the pain, but the main thing is that there’s a pinched nerve involved.

“Right now, I just want to concentrate on getting back to state. I’ve got another treatment tomorrow, and hopefully, by the regional and sectional meet next week, it will be better.”

Parker girls coach Dave Lehmann said he has limited his superstar to mainly the high jump and high hurdles to limit the stress on her right ankle, but Tuesday’s meet was the start of new season.

“You need as many points in a meet like this that Shelby can give you,” Lehmann said. “It's too bad that the foot is still bothering her because she’s really come over the last couple weeks.

“Overall, I was really pleased with the way our girls performed. The meet went about the way I figured. There were events where I thought we would score a few more points, and a couple where we picked up more than I expected us to.”

Grafft reached a personal-best 6-6 in winning the high jump, and he is gearing up for another trip to state. The senior finished third at state in the event in Division 1 a year ago.

Speaker also eclipsed a personal record by clearing 13-6 with his win in the vault.

“We had a couple of kids PR today, and that’s what you like to see in a meet like this,” Parker boys coach Joe Dye said. “Second place as a team was the goal, but Memorial really competed well to finish ahead of us.”

Pregont jumped 21-4 to easily win the long jump, and Craig senior Greg Pedersen was second in the shot put.

Craig’s Desiree Metcalf threw the discus a school-record 120 feet, 7 inches en route to a fourth-place finish, while Paige Demos of Parker finished second behind her sister in the high jump. The Vikings’ Cassie Niles was second to Shelby Demos in the high hurdles, and teammate Brooke King was second in the 3,200.

Memorial’s Tiffany Jones and Middleton’s Maggie Bollig joined Demos as winners of three events.
