— UW-Whitewater’s softball team is one win away from a berth in the Division III World Series.

Suzanne Gersich singled to drive in Ashley Smith in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Warhawks to a 2-1 win over top-ranked DePauw University in a regional semifinal game Sunday.

Whitewater (34-9) and DePauw (40-3) play at 10 a.m. today with the winner advancing to the World Series.

After DePauw defeated Whitewater on Friday night to give the Warhawks their first loss in the double-elimination tournament, Gersich and pitcher Jessica Stang helped the team stay alive.

Stang went the distance to pick up the win. She allowed only four hits and struck out four.

DePauw led 1-0 in the sixth before Whitewater tied the game on back-to-back doubles by Lauren Cruz and Amanda LeBeau tied the game.

Gersich ended the game in the ninth with an RBI single to left.

Whitewater won its first game on Sunday, 7-3 over Wartburg College, thanks to home runs from Gersich and Orfordville Parkview graduate Amy Gahl.

Nikole Schulty picked up the win in relief. She struck out 10 and did not allow a run.
