UW-Whitewater made quick work of Coe College in the opening game of the NCAA Division III regional tournament in Rock Island, Ill.

The Warhawks needed only five innings to stop the Kohawks, 9-1, Thursday in a game called by the mercy rule.

Whitewater (31-8) plays Wartburg (30-6) at 4 p.m. today in the double-elimination tournament.

Coe’s Ashley Leonard opened the game with a homer, but that was as much noise as the Kohawks made.

Freshman Jessica Stang improved to 9-3 with a complete-game victory.

The Warhawks had 11 hits, including a homer and double by junior Liz Yucius. The catcher drove in four runs, including a three-run homer in the fourth.

Junior Ashley Smith went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Orfordville Parkview graduate Amy Gahl went 2-for-4.
