Craig baseball team collects sweep

MADISON — Janesville Craig is knocking on the door of the elusive .500 mark in Big Eight Conference baseball.

Craig High carried over the momentum from Tuesday’s hard-hitting 9-6 victory over Janesville Parker to sweep last-place Madison West, 6-5 and 2-1, in a doubleheader here Thursday and climb to 6-7 in the conference.

Senior right-hander Trevor Foss, the fourth Craig pitcher, sealed the deal in Game 1 by pitching two scoreless innings. Foss then started the second game, but junior right-hander Brett Fredricks came on in the second and pitched three-hit, shutout ball through the final six innings.

Junior first baseman Dylan Grall had a double, home run and four RBIs for Craig to highlight the first-game victory.

After jumping off to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener, Craig came from behind twice. The Cougars tied it at 4-4 in the bottom of the second after West scored four runs in the top of the inning. Craig went ahead to stay in a two-run sixth that wiped out the Regents’ 5-4 edge.

Ben Yaucher, Craig’s starting pitcher, finished with three of the Cougars’ nine hits and had an RBI. Senior catcher Kaleb Eichman had Craig’s other RBI.

Grall completed a six RBI day with a two-run double in the first inning of the second game. That was all the Cougars needed, as Fredricks shut down the Regents (0-10) after they got one run off Foss in the bottom of the first inning.
