Middleton drops Parker tennis team
JANESVILLE Janesville Parker got strong play from a revamped lineup but not a victory in Big Eight boys tennis here Wednesday.
Middleton topped the Vikings, 7-0, to go 4-0 in the conference.
“Middleton is a real tough team, and our No. 1 doubles team had a real good match,’’ Parker coach Mike Fuhrmann said of Nick Gilbank and Jason Knutson, who played No. 1 and 3 singles in the Vikings’ 4-3 loss to Madison La Follette on Tuesday. “They took on the best and played well.’’
Jon Mahvi and Ken Szulczewski were 6-4, 6-2 winners over Gilbank and Knutson. Mitch Curless moved up from No. 2 to No. 1 singles for Parker and lost 6-0, 6-1 to Robbie Kutchin.
Matt Knutson moved over from doubles to No. 4 singles for Parker and made a strong showing in 6-2, 6-3 loss to Joe Shmigelski.
“Knutson hit the ball well and stayed with his man,’’ Fuhrmann said.
Parker (0-4) will be looking for the same staying power today at Madison West.
