— Beloit College officials are forming a plan to replace president John Burris after he announced his resignation Thursday.

College spokesman Ron Nief said the resignation was unanticipated. Burris will become the president of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, a private foundation in North Carolina.

“For the past eight years, I have had the rewarding experience of leading Beloit College,” Burris said in a statement. “They have been years of challenge and excitement with each day providing an interesting new set of issues and ideas.”

Burris said he leaves confident that the college is in a strong position to continue and enhance its tradition of excellence.

Nief said a search firm will conduct an international search for candidates, because Beloit College students come from nearly 50 different countries and the college does not want to limit its search.

An interim president will take the helm for about a year.

Burris’ resignation takes effect June 30.
