Evansville has gone full circle, at least for midseason, since rejoining Home Talent League baseball in 2005.
The Jays completed their climb to the top of the West Division in the Southeast Section by hammering Lake Mills, 9-0, at Warner Park in Madison on Sunday, while Deerfield was handing Stoughton a stunning 5-4 defeat.
In notching its sixth straight win, Evansville took advantage of the upset to move a game ahead of Stoughton (5-2) at 6-1.
Utica, a 7-0 winner over Cambridge on Saturday and 4-2 winner over East Division leader Jefferson on Sunday, tied Stoughton for second place at 5-2. Albion improved to 4-3 in the West by blanking Fort Atkinson, 6-0, and Orfordville completed the Southeastern action with a 6-5 win over Whitewater.
n Evansville 9, Lake Mills 0—Winning pitcher Mike Drefahl threw a three-hitter, while the Jays rode a 12-hit attack past Lake Mills (3-4), the East Division’s third-place team.
The Jays got all the scoring they needed in a two-run second inning. Jeremy Rasmussen’s bases-loaded single produced the first run, and Nick Manion’s walk with the bases still loaded made it 2-0.
Manion’s sacrifice fly gave Evansville a 3-0 lead in the fourth. Jon Frey’s RBI single with two outs and Craig Paton’s two-run double extended the Jays’ lead to 6-0 in the fifth, and they completed the rout with a three-run sixth.
Dreyfahl preserved his shutout by catching a ninth-inning line drive and doubling a Lake Mills runner off first base.
n Albion 6, Fort Atkinson 0—Mike Nanstad took care of business on the mound, and Jesse Appel led the offense as Albion kept visiting Fort Atkinson (4-4) a game behind Jefferson in the East Division loss column.
Nanstad scattered seven hits and allowed no walks in pitching a complete game, while Appel drove in three runs with a double and triple.
The Tigers took the lead in a three-run second inning that included RBI singles by Aaron Manogue, Matt Millar and Ethan Vaade. Appel, the Southeast Section’s most valuable player in 2006, made 5-0 with a two-run double to the right-field corner in the fourth, then added his RBI triple in the sixth.
n Deerfield 5, Stoughton 4—Mike Schulz led the way as Deerfield, 2-7 in the East, knocked Stoughton out of a tie for the West lead.
Schulz struck out 12 in pitching an eight-hitter. He also had a solo home run in the fourth that ignited Deerfield’s comeback from a 3-0 deficit, and his RBI single with two outs in the seventh highlighted a two-run rally that gave the Demons a 5-3 lead.
n Orfordville 6, Whitewater 5—Three runs in the bottom of the ninth, highlighted by Joe Cox’s RBI single, carried Orfordville past the visiting Swingers.
B.J. Cook’s two-run homer in the first gave the Orioles a 2-0 lead, but Whitewater gained a 3-2 edge in a two-run fourth and made it 5-3 with a seventh-inning run.
Cox got the win with four innings of relief pitching as Orfordville improved to 2-6 in the West and dropped Whitewater to 2-5 in the East.
n Utica 4, Jefferson 2—After trailing 4-0, Jefferson fell short with runs in the eighth and ninth, but the Blue Devils retained the undisputed East lead at 6-3.
Matt Ellingson’s seven-hit pitching and RBI single in a three-run first paced Utica.
