Edgerton's Hesselman gets all-state honors
Make it one more major high school golf honor for Edgerton star Mike Hesselman.
The Crimson Tide’s four-year standout, who placed second in the WIAA Division 2 state tournament, has been named second-team all-state by the Wisconsin Golf Coaches Association.
That follows a senior season in which Hesselman repeated as Rock Valley medalist, became a three-time all-conference selection, led his team to a second straight conference championship and a Division 2 regional title.
Hesselman also earned a second straight trip to the state tournament, where he put on one of his most dazzling performances. He shot a 3-under-par 69 in the second round at University Ridge to tie for first place in Division 2 with a 177 total for 36 holes before losing the championship playoff to Madison Edgewood’s Cody Strang.
Since then, Hesselman has had a 5-under-67 at the La Crosse Country Club to win Wisconsin Junior PGA Tour event as he prepares to join the Viterbo College golf program thios fall in La Crosse.
Hesselman is joined in the WGCA all-state selections by Edgerton sophomore Dan Ozga, who has received honorable mention after also qualifying for the Division 2 state tournament. The honorable-mention list also includes Lake Geneva Badger’s Alex Gaugert.
Kettle Moraine’s Sam Frank and Eau Claire Memorial’s Brady Keegan have been named WGCA Co-Players of the Year. They tied for second place in the Division 1 state tournament behind Madison West’s Mike Battista, a second-team all-state selection.
