Janesville's Behm two strokes off the lead in Fischer golf tournament

— Proper course management.

That was the key for Andy De Keuster on Friday as he grabbed the first-round lead in the 42nd annual Ray Fischer State Medal Play Championship at Riverside Golf Course.

De Keuster, a Franksville native who will be a senior at Northwestern University, opened the 72-hole tournament with a 7-under par 65. He holds a two-shot lead over four others, including Janesville’s Matt Behm, heading into today’s second round.

Dustin Schwab of Waunakee, Travis Meyer of River Falls and Nick Krattiger of Monroe joined Behm in shooting 67. Lake Geneva’s Alex Gaugert, University of Wisconsin senior Danny Zimmerman and Todd Schaap of Kenosha shot 68 and are three shots back.

After playing in the Fischer for the first time a year ago and making the cut, De Keuster decided to hit irons off the tee for the majority of the holes and leave his driver in the bag. The strategy worked as De Keuster birdied eight holes in his round, including the first two he played. He had only one bogey on his card in carding his lowest round ever at Riverside.

“I just played smart golf. That’s all,” De Keuster said. “I’m pleased with the round because I didn’t try to overpower the course.

“I used good course management and put together a solid round. It was a good start to what I hope is a good tournament for me.”

Behm, the 2006 Fischer champion and the Riverside course record-holder with a 10-under 62, also had a productive start to the tournament. He did not have a bogey a three-putt green, and credited his caddy, Todd Wuettrick, for keeping him in line.

“I have the same caddy I had in 2006 when I won it, and that made a world of difference,” Behm said. “”We play the course so much together during the summer that we can pick out the lines pretty well on the greens and know how to read the course.

“I can’t complain at all about my round today. I made some crucial putts when I had to, and kind of just put it on cruise control for the round.”

Zimmerman, who is coming off a strong junior season for the Badgers, remained close to the lead despite a poor finish to his round. He bogeyed 18 after failing to get up and down from just off the green.

“That leaves a bad taste in your mouth,” Zimmerman said of his final hole. “But as long as I can stay close to the lead and keep the ball in play, I should be OK.”

After Behm’s 67, Charlie Roherty had Janesville’s second-lowest round with an even-par 72.

The field will be cut to low 70-plus ties after today’s second round. Sunday will be a 36-hole finale.
