— Eight people, all men, have applied to fill two vacant seats on the Janesville School Board. The deadline to apply is today.

The latest applicants are Karl Dommershausen, 65, of 2419 Plymouth Ave., and Jim Farrell, 61, of 1427 N. Harmony Drive.

The application deadline is 4:30 p.m. today

Dommershausen is the owner of 27 West Appraisal & Estate Services, 103 S. Jackson St. He has been active in promoting downtown Janesville and is a member of the Downtown Development Alliance Board.

Dommershausen ran unsuccessfully for Janesville City Council in 2007 and 2008. He has been a leader in efforts to build a skate park and to turn one-way streets downtown into two-ways.

Farrell is controller of Orchid International in Monroe. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and said he is very interested in education, in part because his wife is a longtime teacher at Whitewater High School.

Farrell also is treasurer of his church, Harmony Hills Presbyterian.

“I believe that with my financial background … and my interest in the issues in the education area, that it would be a good fit for me,” he said.

Other applicants are Jason Dowd, David Habeck, Munir “Mike” Hanna, Tom Lemmer, Peter D. Severson and Dale Thompson.

A school board committee will narrow the field, and the full board will vote to fill the two vacant seats. Appointees will serve until the April 2009 elections.

Anyone else wanting to apply must write about him or herself and deliver it by 4:30 p.m. to assistant board clerk Nancy Hewes at the Educational Services Center, 527 S. Franklin St. Call Hewes for more information at (608) 743-5056.
