Evansville has stamped itself as a bona fide contender in the Southeast Section of Home Talent League baseball.
The Jays used a big third inning Sunday to gain a 5-3 victory over Utica, a perennial contender, and tie Stoughton for the West Division lead at 5-1.
Albion got back to the .500 mark at 3-3 by rallying for a 7-4 win at Orfordville. Jefferson (6-1) gained a two-game lead in the East Division by routing Deerfield, 9-2, while Fort Atkinson edged Lake Mills, 3-2 in 10 innings, and Cambridge slipped past Whitewater, 5-4.
n Evansville 5, Utica 3—Brent Cashore’s three-run double with two outs in the third powered host Evansville to its fifth straight win.
Jerod Steindl started the four-run inning with a single. Jeremy Ramussen walked, and Nick Manion reached on an error to load the bases for the key blow by Cashore, who stole third and scored on a wild pitch to give the Jays a 4-0 lead.
Cashore pushed the lead to 5-0 in the fifth after reaching on an error and advancing to third on Jake Bronkema’s single. The run scored on an errant throw to third base.
Utica (3-2) bounced back with a three-run seventh inning that included three singles and a double, but Evansville relief pitcher Nic Larson was in control the rest of the way.
Evansville starter Matt Drefahl struck out eight, walked two and scattered six hits in working 6 2/3 innings.
n Albion 7, Orfordville 4—Jason Millar’s two-run single with two outs in the eighth inning broke a 4-4 tie and carried the Tigers to a come-from-behind victory.
It was Millar’s second run-scoring hit of the day. He also had an RBI single in Albion’s three-run fourth inning, which cut into the 4-0 lead the Orioles had built in the first.
Albion catcher Matt Millar had three hits and scored three runs, including the tying run the eighth, which set the stage for his brother’s clutch hit.
Mike Nanstad and Ben Everson kept Albion in contention with another strong effort on the mound. Nanstad struck out six in six innings, and Everson got the win by allowing only one base-runner and extending his streak to 15 straight innings without allowing an earned run.
Ty Hansen’s RBI single and B.J. Cook’s two-run double sparked Orfordville (1-6) to its four-run inning.
n Jefferson 9, Deerfield 2—Bill Baumann pitched a complete-game eight-hitter in leading Jefferson past visiting Deerfield (1-7).
The Blue Devils made the most of Deerfield’s four errors in a four-run fifth inning that made it 5-0.
n Fort Atkinson 3, Lake Mils 2—Small ball in the bottom of the 10th broke a 2-2 tie and gave Fort Atkinson a win that lifted the Generals (4-3) into second place over the Grays (3-3) in the East Division.
Brandon Krigbaum was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored the winning run on Tom Dehnert’s single.
Fort Atkinson grabbed a 2-0 lead on Dehnert’s two-run single in the fifth, but Lake Mills tied it in a two-run ninth.
n Cambridge 5, Whitewater 4—Cambridge (2-4) rallied from a 4-2 deficit in a two-run eighth inning. Adrian Flores capped the winners’ 10-hit attack by driving in the lead run.
