Janesville's favorite cow was officially welcomed back to the city on Saturday morning. "Bessie" was finally returned to a site near the new Del Taco restaurant on Milton Ave., near where she stood for decades when the Janesville Oasis occupied the area.

— Despite all the bad news the Janesville area has faced lately, one giant fiberglass cow was able to give residents something to celebrate Saturday morning.

“It’s kind of nice to have positive things going on in town,” said Tom Lasse, a partner in BLM Land, the current owners of Bessie the Cow.

Bessie the Cow, a Janesville landmark, returned from her makeover to her northeast side home next to Del Taco during a public rededication ceremony. But the 42nd birthday cake, free Bessie T-shirts, dozens of pictures and car honking from admiring fans likely won’t be the last for her.

Lasse said he hopes to have a lot of fun with her by holding events including an annual birthday party.

“I hope this isn’t the end of her celebration,” he said.

Other secret plans are in the works, he said, which promise to “make some news.”

Thanks to a location closer to Milton Avenue and fewer trees in the area, motorists on Interstate 90/39 now are able to see Bessie.

That’s welcome news for Darlene Freeburg of Janesville, who couldn’t wait for Bessie’s public return. She visited the bovine twice during her makeover by Al Utzig at Utzig’s CARSTAR.

“We went down at Christmas to see her in the snow,” said Freeburg, who attended the rededication with her husband and two sons who were in town from Port Washington and Chattanooga, Tenn. “She’s a trademark for Janesville.”

A combination of Christopher Walken and Talledaga Nights.

hannah,

I'm entitled to my opinion even if it isn't "happy talk" like yours.

Soo can we sign her utters again? Because I feel bad now that she's all painted again, but there is no sign telling me not too... Reguardless I wish she wasn't in the Dell Taco parking lot, but leave it to Janesville to do everything ass-backwards.

I like to picture Bessie as marsupial that goes around and scares people, because she so fast.

I think they should leave the name as Bessie (or Bessy). Just because it is near a mexican style restaurant, does mean we have to give it a mexican name.

Pollo de la lucha is the preferred translation for fighting chicken. Or El Bessie vaca de la lucha (Bessie the fighting cow).

Hannah asked: "did anyone notice sat 21st the mexican like head scarf on the cow?"
Yes, I noticed something, and because of the wind on Sat. it was really flying around. I was not very close to verify but it looked like black garbage bags to me. Anybody know?

I think they should change Bessie's name to "El Diablo". I think that means "fighting chicken" in Spanish.

I am with SK. I didn't grow up in Janesville but I always knew "where the cow was" and Shakey's!
Altho I also don't think it is fitting to be next to Del Taco, I am glad to see her back, close to her "old home." I am sure there are many kids traveling on I-90, pointing out the window, to the beloved Bessie.
Kudos to Al at Utzig for a fine job he did!

She has always been the perfect landmark to tell people "meet me by the cow" and they knew exactly where you meant.

Personally, I think it's an eyesore. Why is it that every time we come up with something representative of Wisconsin, it has to be a big, stupid cow. How about a deer or a musky, instead?

Kudos to Al Utzig of Utzig's Carstar for doing such a GREAT job taking care of Bessie during her absence, as well as giving her such a youthful makeover. Al, you're the best!!!

I'm glad she is back, but it was hard to get a picture by her. My daughter almost was hit by a car in the Del Taco parking lot! There is all that open land right there why did they put her that close to the resturant?

janesvillean: Is that really necessary? Can’t we have one pleasant story without someone bashing GM or its workers? This is a story about a giant cow statue and it somehow comes back to GM; ---unbelievable---!

Would you people STOP putting GM down? What is it with you? If you have nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all. Look in the mirror at yourselves you are no better than anyone else.

GM closed a plant in Mexico, too.

The dairy industry was here a long time before GM and will still be here in 2011.

Bessie is listed on the RoadsideAmerica website. I will try to get them to update their cow article and maybe list this story in their trunkations blog. Just visit http://www.roadsideamerica.com/set/cow.h...
and bookmark the page.

I think they should have replaced the cow with a fiberglass Tahoe! Now, that would worth seeing. Plus, that may show GM how important they are to this city.

When my family visits they like to have their pictures taken in front of the cow so I’m glad Bessie is back. Bessie the cow is something unique to the area and her return adds a bit of cheer during a spell of bad economic and weather related news.
