School board seeks to fill two positions
JANESVILLE The Janesville School Board plans to do something that few if any of its predecessors ever did: Fill two midterm vacancies at the same time.
Amy Rashkin resigned from the board May 30, and Dennis Vechinsky resigned Tuesday.
An advertisement scheduled to run in The Janesville Gazette today, Saturday and Sunday asks interested district residents to apply for the vacant seats.
The last time the board filled a vacancy was in 2000, when it chose Steve Engelbert after Jeff Lind resigned because of a job-related relocation.
The recent resignations set up a scenario in which a majority of the board could be new next year. Here’s how that would work:
Both persons the board chooses now would continue to serve through April 26, 2009. Voters in the April elections will choose their replacements.
In addition, three board members are up for re-election next April: Debra Kolste, DuWayne Severson and Lori Stottler.
The result could be five new faces on the nine-member board, although realistically, incumbents tend to win re-election.
The three top vote-getters will serve three-year terms. The fourth- and fifth-highest vote-getters would serve out the terms of Vechinsky and Rashkin, which continue through April 2010.
Applicants for the open seats must be qualified to vote in the district. Written applications must be delivered to the office of Nancy Hewes, assistant board clerk, by 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 25. The address is 527 S. Franklin St., Janesville, WI 53548.
Applications outlining the applicant’s qualifications must not exceed two typewritten pages.
