— Janesville officials are reacting to news out of Detroit that the Janesville GM plant is one of four scheduled to close down production.

Janesville City Manager Steve Sheiffer says he continues to be an optimist. He says while his heart goes out to employees at the plant and at related parts suppliers, the city must move forward with it's economic development strategy.

Executive Director of Forward Janesville, John Beckord, says the reaction from the public will be immediate and he foresees decisions to make major purchases put on hold, and much belt tightening. He also sees a pinch on local charities as donations dry up because of the loss of jobs. But he's also optimistic saying the newly built road linking the GM plant to I-90 is a major marketing tool for redevelopment of the site.

The Janesville plant is among four pegged for closing between now and the end of 2010.
