Analysts: Janesville's GM plant is among most vulnerable
From the Associated Press:
Industry analysts say General Motors's sport utility plant in Janesville is among those most vulnerable as the automaker prepares to announce restructuring to deal with the evaporating pickup-truck and SUV market.
GM executives are expected to disclose the moves right before the company's annual shareholders meeting Tuesday. It likely will mean shift cuts or even closures of some factories.
The Janesville plant employs about 2,600 workers and produces large-sized SUVs.
Analysts say the plants at Janesville and Moraine, Ohio are the most vulnerable.
Greg Gardner, an analyst with the Oliver Wyman Group, says that both plants are a distance from parts suppliers. He says plants in Texas and Mexico can easily satisfy demand for big SUVs, while GM may stop building mid-size SUVs in a few years.
