City may buy Look West property
The property is on the northwest corner of North Franklin Street and Ravine Street across from the former Accudyne Building and just south of Mercy Hospital.
The property is within the Traxler-Medical Center redevelopment area and is not a contributing building to the district, according to the recently adopted Downtown Vision & Strategy study.
The purchase and demolition of the building would remove a blighting influence on the surrounding neighborhood and would encourage redevelopment of the area, Al Hulick, city development specialist, wrote in a memo.
The property has been for sale for several years and includes a 1,160-square-foot masonry structure that has been used as an automotive repair shop and gas station. The property is listed for sale by the owner for $120,000. The equalized value is $90,850. In 2008, it was appraised for $86,000.
Cost to tear down the building is $11,000.
The plan commission will review the purchase at 6:30 p.m. Monday in City Hall, 18 N. Jackson St. Its recommendation will be forwarded to the council.
