— Thanks to nearly $7,000 in grants, Walworth County Jail inmates will have books, supplies and a curriculum in place when they attend classes as part of the new literacy program.

The Walworth County Jail Literacy Program received a $5,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, according to the Walworth County Literacy Council’s news release. The program also received a $1,944 grant from the ProLiteracy’s National Book Scholarship Fund, according to the news release.

The program’s tutoring sessions will begin in August, according to the news release, and five volunteer tutors will teach two classes. The first course will be an adult education class on reading, writing and math skills, and the second will be English as a second language.

Classes will be held in small groups and individual tutoring sessions twice a week at the jail, according to the news release.

The Dollar General grant will be used for instructional materials, supplies and operating expenses, according to the news release. The ProLiteracy grant will be spent on teacher’s manuals, student workbooks and reading books.
