Gypsy moths are a serious problem in pockets of Rock County
Gypsy moths are a serious problem in pockets of Rock County.
UW Extension Horticulture Educator Mike Maddox says the moths don't kill a tree, but he wants to have a discussion with property owners about whether it's cause for panic. He says a large area of Beloit, a pocket north of Janesville and the south side of Janesville are infested with the moths.
Maddox is starting a series of educational events at Rotary Botanical Gardens with a discussion about gypsy moths August 7.

Although the moths don't kill the tree, they weaken it so it's more likely to die from any other stress it might encounter, like drought. Here in VA we have lost lots of white oaks that way.
