Janesville Legion still a win short of state berth
A trip to the Class AAA state tournament will be on the line today for Janesville’s American Legion baseball team.
Janesville suffered its first loss in the double-elimination Burlington Regional, 3-2 to Beloit here Sunday, and plays Kenosha for the championship at 6:30 p.m. today. The winner advances to the state tournament at La Crosse.
Kenosha, 4-1 in regional, earned its shot at the title by eliminating Beloit, 8-3, in Sunday’s second game.
Four Janesville errors proved to be the difference in Sunday’s opener as Beloit scored three unearned runs.
“We made too many mistakes and just didn’t play a very good game,” Janesville coach Ron Pohlman said after his team fell to 3-1 in the regional and 20-9 overall.
“If you would’ve told me that we would hold Beloit to only three runs today (Sunday), I would’ve liked our chances. But we didn’t make a couple of plays defensively, and we had too many mental mistakes as well.
“But I think we’ll bounce back tomorrow (today) and play a good game. We haven’t lost two games in a row all season.”
Dylan Grall suffered the loss despite not allowing an earned run. Matt Beyer had two of Janesville’s six hits.
Kenosha defeated Janesville in two of three meetings during the regular season. If Janesville prevails today, it will be its first trip to state since 1999.
