Bohlman first-round leader
JANESVILLE The Janesville Country Club golf course has a reputation of being tough but fair.
At a distance of 6,347 yards from the blue tees, the state’s oldest country club course features elevated greens that require a deft touch on any putts above the hole.
In Friday’s first round of the Janesville Men’s City Championship, those elevated greens made life tough for the majority of the field.
Two-time city champion Brad Bohlman fired a 1-over par 73 to take the lead after the opening round, with five-time city champ Jeff Bruegger a shot behind after a 74. Two other former city champions, Matt Behm and Ryan Coffey, are three shots back along with Sean Halvorson.
The second day of the 54-hole event is scheduled for today at Glen Erin Golf Club.
On a day when only 13 golfers in the 140-man field broke 80 from the blue tees, Bohlman was happy with his start. The 1999 and 2001 champion said a wayward driver kept him from a below-par round.
“I think the best part of the day was the fact that I had a lot of fun playing,” said Bohlman, who played in a threesome with his brother, Braddy (77), and Bruegger.
“I’m pleased to get out of here with the score that I had. There were a couple of holes where I had no idea where my driver was going.”
Brad carded a 2-over 38 on his front nine, but rebounded nicely with a 1-under 35 on the back. His 35 on the back was the low nine of the day.
Bruegger, who is gunning for his sixth city title and first since 1994, was his usual consistent self. He had 37 on both nines and will be a definite factor the final 36 holes.
Behm, who finished 11th at the State Amateur on Thursday, cost himself a chance at sharing the lead after three-putting the par 4, 17th.
“There was a couple of really tricky pin placements, and 17 was one of them,” Behm said. “I should’ve been right around even-par for the round, but tomorrow’s another day, and I think I’ll post a better score.”
Last year’s champion, Sam Van Galder, struggled to an opening-round 81. Van Galder hit only four fairways the entire round and that left him in trouble on a number of holes.
“I couldn’t keep it out of the trees,” Van Galder said. “And I was short-sided on a number of holes.
“It’s disappointing because I thought I’d play a lot better than I did.”
Matt Stried fired an 81 to grab a one-stroke lead over Steve Caya and Mike Reid in A Flight, while Dave Herr’s 79 leads the B Flight by one shot over John Zimmerman.
Steven Hiser and Greg Mullen each shot 77 to share the lead in the C Flight, and Dennis Raabe’s 83 topped D Flight.
The B, C and D Flight’s all played from the white tees which shortened the course by about 200 yards, according to Country Club Pro Lance Marting.
