Less concern for weekend flooding
JANESVILLE The storms expected to hit southern Wisconsin tonight and tomorrow have weakened, and that bodes well for folks just starting to dry out from the flooding last month.
The National Weather Service canceled a flash flood watch Friday for all of southern Wisconsin.
“Right now it’s really becoming more optimistic,” said Marc Kavinsky, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Sullivan. “There’s not as much of a heavy rain threat.”
He said he “wouldn’t be surprised” if the flood watch is cancelled today.
The National Weather Service said Thursday the front expected to dump rain across the area this weekend was similar to the front that produced widespread flooding in June, but the situation is changing.
“It doesn’t look as strong with this system,” Kavinsky said.
He said the storms predicted to hit the area Thursday night “fizzled” as they moved into southern Wisconsin.
And while storms still are expected late tonight and tomorrow, the area has dried out enough that it could handle a period of heavy rain.
“If it’s repeated bouts, that’s a different story,” Kavinsky said.
