— A quick start carried the Janesville 14-year-olds to victory Wednesday in the opening game of the Baraboo District Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament.

Janesville erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to a 11-0 win over Cross Plains in a game called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Three Janesville pitchers limited Cross Plains to one hit as the defending 13-year-old state champions got off to a good start.

"We got everybody in the game and kept our pitching appearances short," Janesville coach Tom Davey said.

"We've got some areas that we need to clean up, and we'll get after that tomorrow."

Janesville is scheduled to play host Baraboo in a winner's bracket game at 9 a.m. this morning.

Cameron Wright started the scoring for Janesville in the first with an RBI double, and Dylan Hoskins eventually made it 5-0 with a two-run single.

Sam McCann's two-run double capped off the 10-run rally. Janesville scored 10 runs on only three hits, but was aided by five walks and two Cross Plains errors.

"It's always nice to start the tournament with a win, but we can play better and we're going to have to," Davey said.

"We only had six hits, and three came in the first inning."
