Favre: Pack should let me play elsewhere
MILWAUKEE Brett Favre finally is speaking for himself: He wants to play but doesn’t feel welcome in Green Bay, so he’s asking to be released.
The quarterback’s first substantial comments on his latest retirement decision reversal come in an interview with Fox News on “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren.”
“I am guilty of retiring early and there is a reason for that,” Favre said, according to an excerpt provided to The Associated Press before the Monday night broadcast. “And the major issue is ’Why did he retire?,’ and ’He asked for a release because he doesn’t want to play in Green Bay.’ That’s not true. And I hope people are hearing this and saying ’OK, that clears it up.”’
According to Van Susteren, who spoke to the AP by telephone Monday afternoon, Favre said he was “never fully committed” to retiring and felt pressured by the Packers to make a decision, a notion Packers general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy tried to dispel in an interview with the AP on Saturday.
“Ted always wanted Brett back,” McCarthy said. “We always wanted Brett back.”
Favre told Fox he understands that the Packers want to move on — but if they’re doing so, they should let him go.
“Them moving on does not bother me,” Favre said. “It doesn’t. I totally understand that. By me retiring March 3rd, I knew that could possibly happen. All I was saying is, you know, I’m thinking about playing again.”
Van Susteren, who is from Appleton, Wis., and is a Packers shareholder, said Favre made it clear he would not return to the Packers if he wasn’t the starter. And while Favre said the Packers asked him for a list of teams to which he would accept a trade, he wants to be released to make sure he ends up on a competitive club.
Thompson said the team wasn’t going to release Favre, but he could come back in a “different role than he was” because the team is committed to going forward with Aaron Rodgers.
Thompson and Packers coach Mike McCarthy wouldn’t discuss the possibility of trading Favre and said they hadn’t received any trade inquiries as of Saturday.
Thompson and McCarthy gave AP a detailed description of their dealings with Favre throughout the offseason, including an episode a few weeks after Favre’s retirement where the two were prepared to fly to Mississippi to seal the deal on a Favre comeback — only to have the quarterback change his mind again.
Favre’s interview — which was receiving top billing over an interview with John McCain in promos for Van Susteren’s show that aired during the day Monday — is the latest development in what is looking more and more like an irreparable schism between one of the NFL’s most revered franchises and perhaps its most beloved quarterback.
Thompson called the situation “gut-wrenching” Saturday.
“I mean, it hurts,” he said. “I’m not talking about physically hurting, but the sensitivity. We understand where the fans are coming from. This is a hot-button issue that surpasses anything I’ve ever gone through.”

Thankfully the Mississippi Mud Slinger and Teddy Two Face both kept their considerable mouths shut for one night to honor the Hall of Famers.
This standoff between two stubborn egomaniacs can only result in a lose lose situation for the organization and one of its greatest legends.
1. Favre stays retired and the Packers lose a quarterback who demonstrated last year that he has some gas left in the tank.
2. The packers won't release him because that would be a foolish business decision. As tarnished as Thompson's reputation is now with this Favre mess he should be fired on the spot if he grants Favre his outright release.
3. The Packers trade him. Unlikely because he wants to play for a winner and the winning teams have good quarterbacks, duhhh. The teams that would be interested in him are mostly very bad teams. Brett needs that national limelight.
4. They bring him back as the starter. Rodgers is gone in free agency. Brett retires (maybe, maybe not, maybe, maybe not) and we are stuck with either Brohm or Flynn next year.
This mess is the result of incredible arrogance demonstrated by both Thompson and Favre, neither of whom deserves our respect as Packer fans in the handling of this. Rather than building on a fantastic 13-3 season we are all left twisting in this turmoil. I can only wonder what kind of message this sends to all the young, impressionable players on the Packers.

Teddy should not be an idiot and let Favre comeback. Why rely on a guy who has only started 2 NFL games ever compared to a guy who has never missed a start in 16 years even when his father passed away. We were so close to a superbowl berth last year it's just dumb not to let Favre comeback we are a better team with him.

NFL licensing contributes 3.5% to 4% of revenues the past few years and all of that isn't just Favre jerseys. The two biggest components to revenue are ticket sales and broadcasting revenues (shared with all other teams). Favre's salary is nearly double what the Packers made in licensing last year.

time to pack it up folks: after a series of calls last night, Brett has decided to stay retired and not apply for reinstatement.
.
John_Doe: I never said Brett wasn't without culpability.
.
why_the_fuss: Could very well be. But, Sunday night--and Monday night--Packer games still have a capacity crowd. It is a neat experience, but boring at best. I suspect it has more to do with Brett not being there than it does with it being on a Sunday. Guess we will find out next year when it's back on a Saturday.
.
Ted Thompson has clunked heads with the Favre family since he got to GB. And, as someone said, thee with the bigger bladder wins. While I suspect a perforation in his near future, Thompson is the bigger bladder holder for now. And maybe colon.

jvldss - revenue is much more than ticket sales. The Packers sold more apparel (which is licensed through the NFL and the teams get a cut) between 1996 and 2000 than they did the previous 15 years combined. There is much more money in selling jerseys, shirts, hats, and other items than there is in tickets.

Hockey, I agree completely with your comments except the impact of releasing him. Releasing him would have less impact on the cap. When Thompson placed Favre on the reserve/retired list it took his salary off the cap. If he is released it will remain off the cap.
However at the same time it accelerated what remains of his signing bonus which is money that must be considered relative to the cap. Though I don't have the exact numbers I do know that the accelerated bonus is much less than his salary so the team comes out ahead if he is released.
However I agree it's a business and it will be a cold day in hell when they release him.
I personally believe that when the dust settles he will remain retired.

soside, Favre has a contract with the PACKERS that still has three years to go. It is mute at this point because Ted Thompson has placed him on the reserve/retired list. However if he requests reinstatement he is a PACKER and the contract is reinstated and remains in force. Therefore the PACKERS are obligated to honor the contract he has with them. I'm not a lawyer and I don't know all the legal ins and outs of the situation but I know for certain that this is the case because Thompson among others have stated it in interviews.

With a ticket waiting list of 70,000 fans that translates to, not hundreds of years, but thousands of years, I don't think the Packers are too concerned with "lost" revenue if Favre does retire or plays elsewhere. The Pack sold out in the 70's and 80's when they were horrible and will continue to sell out whether or not Favre is the quarterback. The true Packer fans support the team and not any one player.
The Whitlock article is money!
If Favre does start this season and Rodgers is again second string, Rodgers will probably opt for free agency and Favre may/may not retire after this season leaving the Packers with two unproven rookie QBs next year - ouch!

JohnDoe: and you don't think the Packers organization hung Brett and/or the Vikings out in the breeze with their lame sophomoric allegations of tampering?
.
It's a pissing match at this point, which is pretty obvious. There was a very well written article by Jason Whitlock to TT on FoxSports.
.
BTW--I "told you" 3+ weeks ago that Brett would be back. BEFORE any of this was made public and it was all being dispelled as rumor.
.
why_the_fuss: Not everything in life is black and white. I told you the Packers--and who is the face of the Packers??--TT and McCarthy--were going to do something (following the Greta van Susteren interview). And....they did. Just because they didn't hire a sky-writer and sign their name in lipstick doesn't mean it wasn't from them. Doh!
.
And, I will agree, Brett is a grown man and shouldn't have to be wooed back into playing or feeling welcome. HOWEVER, that is the name of the game in professional sports. You (the GM, franchise) stroke the ego of a big name player to lure them into playing for your team. Why? It's a business. Big name players (with or without talent) produce. What do they produce? A lot of things. First and foremost though, they produce butts in seats. Without that, the team has less revenue. And, with less revenue, the team has less promise. Case in point: Family night. It's been sold out in a matter of HOURS for the last 4 years (family night wasn't held for 2 years because of renovations). However, 3 WEEKS after tickets going on sale, there were still more than 10% available. And, with the chatter of Favre's return, they have sold down to about 5% remaining.
.
If Brett isn't at training camp, it's because of TT.

For Pete's sake, what does he want from the Packers? A dozen roses delivered to his door every day? Chocolates on his pillow? A mix tape from Ted?
He has to know, too, that the Packers will unconditionally release him when Hell freezes over. Football is a business, and the dumbest business decision would be to let him go wherever he wants and get nothing in return, plus take the salary cap hit for releasing him. Ain't gonna happen.

It is shocking that Brett picked Greta and Fox News over some of his other close media friends--like Chris Mortenson and ESPN. But, it is what it is now. Let's also remember that Great von Susteren could have said no to the interview. As Roger Clayton, on ESPN, said to end this media circus and chess match, Brett needs to send in his letter to Comm. Goodell to be reinstated. I don't blame the Packers for not taking Favre's word at 100% face value after his change of heart in March. But, sending in the reinstatement request and showing up to training camp would be a pretty good start at healing the wounds. And bringing home Lombardi's Trophy!

Is it because she and Deanna are friends? If so, that kind of undercuts Brett's credibility as far as the interview goes, making it sound like he sought her out to get the questions he wanted or know he wouldn't be challenged.
If he wanted to tell his side of the story, all he'd have had to do was sent out a mass e-mail saying he planned a press conference at such and such time and such and such place and the media would have been there like flies on a cowpie.

No, they should not give him an outright release under any circumstances. It is just that the differences now seem so great that it may be impossible for the Packers and Favre to come together. Favre does still represent the best chance for the Packers to win this season. I think the Packers are wrong saying he will have to return as Rodgers backup. That is a huge slap at Favre's considerable ego and makes no fiscal sense - nearly 13 million for a backup QB - plus an unhealthy situation in the locker room. Bring him back and have the two compete (Brohm as well) for the starting job...shouldn't this be the case for every position on the team? Give him a chance to remain the starter and give Rodgers or Brohm a chance to win it from him. Best player plays and that should be Favre if he has devoted his off season to conditioning as he has in recent years.

jvldss: Thanks for your kind words. I agree it's time to get down to football.
However ...
I don't want Favre released, traded or benched. I still think he's the guy. I think Aaron Rodgers was a mistake. The Packers were sort of forced to take him when he was drafted. He was highly touted and was expected to be the first overall pick by the 49ers if they didn't take Alex Smith. When they took Smith, Rodgers stock tumbled down. When he wound up in the Packers lap, and it was widely recognized that Brett wasn't getting any younger, I think they assumed a now or never mentality and took him out of fear they wouldn't get a shot at another strong quarterback candidate. They jumped at a "viable option" so to speak. The scouting reports on Brian Brohm use terms like "franchise quarterback," and I have a better feel about him than Rodgers. Sure Rodgers played well against Dallas, but nobody knew what to expect from him as there was no film on him. Well, now there is. I think things will be much different when opposing defenses get a chance to see him in advance on film this year.
As for Greta Van Susteren being Deanna's friend, I don't know about that and don't care. I just thought the questions Greta asked could have been asked by my 8-year-old with the same effectiveness.

Favre has now spoken. The Packers have spoken. The truth lies somewhere in between the two interpretations with every Packer fan and Favre fan putting their own spin on things. The fact is the Packers had a great season last year. They remain a very young, talented solid contender in the NFC, but it is time to be done with all this Favre foolishness and start focusing on football with or without Brett. Watched the second half of the interview last night. Now I'm more convinced than ever that Favre is being forthright in wanting to come back and was trying to do the right thing when he retired. If the Packers are smart, they bring him back, make him the starter and put Rodgers back on the bench before trading him away next year. The Packers next longtime starter after Brett should be be Brian Brohm. Give him a year or two under Favre and see what happens. I never liked the draft pick of Rodgers.
By the way, momof5, I've enjoyed reading your posts. Just guessing, but I'd bet Favre has a Snapper lawnmower considering he does advertisements for them. Also, as far as Greta Van Susteren being a shareholder - so am I. But owning worthless stock doesn't mean much more than you're willing to part with $100 bucks to call yourself a shareholder. Also, she really should have done her homework. She referred to the Vikings as "Minneapolis" twice during her questioning. She came across to me as sort of uninformed and, at times, lobbed Brett some softball questions that set up his answers.
That aside, I'm with you. I'm not criticizing at all, just making observations.

Really, do any of us know what Bret is going through? I certainly have made decisions that I have regretted because I didn't think them through far enough. But with that said, it isn't fair for him to think that he should just be let go. If he does want to regain access to play football, then he should have to follow the rules, and be traded by the pack. It may seem unreasonable to him, but there are contracts in place to protect ALL parties involved. Not just the ones who think they are irreplaceable.

Justsome1here: Hey, I am a straight-out news junkie and have a pretty good scope on what's happening in our world today. But you know what? I work hard all day long, have three college degrees (including a master's degree in social work), am a certified addictions registered nurse (which means I try to help the chemically dependent 24/7), and try to make my money last in our slacking economy. And guess what? Our bodies release endorphins (feel-good chemicals) when we get a "happy boost" from life (or drugs ... which is why addicts want the junk). Well, right now, at this moment (and for many, many moments over the years) BRETT FAVRE ON A FOOTBALL FIELD is the only thing that gets old SarahB to squirt out some endorphins and feel good. That is why this crisis regarding Brett and the Packers is so friggin' important to me. So I say, "God bless us, everyone" and please bring back Brett!

justsome1here: You made very valid points, and lovetoscrap rebutted them very well. However, to be perfectly honest, if it were not for Brett Favre being on "On the Record" last night before McCain, I wouldn't have listened to one second of his drivel because I would never have tuned in. So, perhaps, more people heard his propaganda than normally would have because of God, err, Brett Favre.
.
PS--Check out the Fourward Foundation AND the Hope Foundation. Brett and Deanna Favre have done more to combat the negativities and tragedies many face in their lives than probably all of us have combined!

Unfortunately, people were more interested in what Brett Favre had to say than presidential candidate John McCain, who has the potential to impact everyone's life. To me, this underscores the fact of why this country is in the state that it is in.

Justsome...maybe you should be donating your time feeding the homeless, finding a cure for aids, helping the owners of buildings downtown clean up so they may re-open sooner and our economy won't suffer more than it already is, enlist so that more will be done sooner in Iraq and everyone can come home, get a doctorate so you can spend all your time finding a cure for cancer or use your time to dispel the rumor of global warming (maybe take on the Gores and convince them to downsize their mansion...of course in the name of saving the planet!) But no...you have better things to do, like read other peoples comments on here and complain about it!

Please don't try to trivialize it because it's not important to you. I'm sure we all realize there are more important things to worry about. We can't spend every minute of every day focusing on every problem that exists. If we want to distract ourselves for a little while over an "adult playing a little boys game," are we really hurting or bothering anyone?

Brett isn't completely innocent here. He's been unclear on his plans each of the past few off-seasons. Each time, the team has to wait before making any moves.
Finally he announces his retirement and the Packers select 2 QB's in the draft, one of them in the 2nd round.
My point is, the team cannot keep doing this. Chances are he'll be worse in '08. After that, he'll continue to decline and debate retirement until his arm falls off.
Go with Rodgers while you can. He's had a perfect NFL upbringing and is probably the best shot we'll have at a real replacement.

This coming from a fan of a team that year after year after year runs wrecks(intentionally mispelled) Grosswoman out as their starting QB, cant draft a good running back EVER, and dont know what a wide reciever is. Then theres the defense. BWAHAHAHAHAHA, theyre ANCIENT!!!!!! We could put Bart Starr back at QB and still finish with a better record than the SORRY BEARS!

Word from lunch is that Brett will be at training camp and Frankie's induction. Although, some of the HOF'ers are upset that there is all this hoopla surrounding Brett and no one is really focusing on the banquet Saturday. One should expect a joint statement from Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy Wednesday or Thursday re: Brett rejoining the team. McCarthy is just getting back into town from AZ later this evening; a business venture.

Am I missing something here? I keep reading about all the "retirement drama" regarding Brett. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't this the FIRST time Brett has retired? Isn't it the media and the coach/manager who would start to hound him after the last game of the season for the past few years? So, he would have a decision to make and each year he made it. To Play! And play he did, very well I might add. I believe him in all this. The guy has always been as humble and down to earth as the rest of us. Considering Rodgers actions, words and always getting hurt (boo hoo), I highly doubt he will ever reach the level of play that Brett has.

Know your role Brett. You make millions throwing a football. You don't sign free agents (Randy Moss), you don't hire coaches (he wanted Mariucci and not McCarthy), you don't draft players (whining about no weapons). That is Ted Thompson's role, like it or not. And by the way, it is also Thompson's decision whether or not the Packers keep you, release you, or trade you NOT YOURS!
To quote your backup from last season, "Get on board, or shut your mouth".

People,
If you actually watched Favre's interview with Greta Van Sustren on Monday night, the only question you should come away with is why in the world did he choose to give his first interview to that Republican-bias media outlet, Fox News. That was the only thing that made me lose any respect for Brett. In watching him talk, he came across as sincere. He admitted straight out that Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy called him on a regular basis and never made him feel they didn't want him back. Simply put, they wanted an answer - quickly after a long, emotional season - as to whether or not he was 100 percent committed to coming back this year. He said no, but admitted he has traditionally felt that way in March because he needs time to assess how he feels. Like he said, he could have just said yes, come back and taken the money, but he was trying to be honest and fair.
Granted, Brett has put us through this drama each year for a while now. But nobody can question his heart and dedication to Green Bay and all Packers fans. Think what you want, but I'm putting a little more faith in Favre telling the truth here than a former Chicago Bears executive who has his own agenda.
Also, Part 2 of the Favre interview will be on tonight at 9 p.m.

PS--If anyone out there is doubting Brett's commitment level: don't. Brett and Deanna (especially Deanna) HATE the media attention and publicity. However, for DEANNA to email Greta von Sustren Sunday evening and ask for her to get Brett's side, means that Favre and his family are 100% committed to playing football. Breleigh is a daddy's girl and she wants her daddy to play football. Never underestimate the power of a daddy's girl! LOL
.
I'm having lunch with a Packer Hall of Famer this afternoon. I will see what other info I can get (ie if he is still slated to be a presenter on Saturday and how the players feel).
.
PS--Calm your nerves. Brett wants to play. But, he won't play for another team. Yes, I know. He asked for his release. Blah Blah. It's all a chess match right now. It's a battle of the wills and a few other things. Brett will be at training camp and there will be no retirement ceremony on September 8th.
.
And, yes, lol, crazycatlady: Rodgers will undoubtedly suffer a broken nail between now and then (whenever then is). If I were him, I'd be the one asking for my release.
