— The rock classic “Should I Stay or Should I Go” has seen a resurgence.

Thanks to the Guitar Hero frenzy, the Clash song is as popular now as it was when it reached No. 1 on the Billboard chart in 1982.

And it has even become the theme song for one of Wisconsin’s most celebrated athletes—Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre.

Favre officially retired March 4. But don’t be surprised if No. 4 is back on the practice field by the end of the month. That was the consensus among Packer fans attending Wednesday night’s Green Bay Packers Tailgate Tour at The Janesville Gazette Printing & Distribution plant.

“My gut says he wants to come back,” Janesville’s Joe Kuhar said. “He loves football too much and doesn’t want to be remembered for throwing an interception on his last pass.

“I don’t think he wanted to retire in the first place. I think he was pressured by management to make a decision right away, so he retired. If he would’ve waited until now, he would’ve never retired.”

Kuhar, who has a shrine in his basement in honor of his beloved Packers, hopes Favre decides to play at least one more year. And so did many of fans who can’t seem to get enough of No. 4.

Mike Rogers of Lake Geneva, who was sporting a No. 4 jersey, says Aaron Rodgers—Favre’s heir apparent—deserves a shot to lead the team, but he thinks Favre will be under center on opening day.

“I think Brett wants to play just one more year,” Rogers said. “Even when he announced his retirement, I thought he’d still be back.”

Russ Rieck of Janesville is one Packer fan who doesn’t think Favre will be back. Rieck thinks Favre has the itch to play again but that he’ll stay in Mississippi.

“He’s done,” Rieck said of Favre. “He’s happy in Mississippi, and I think the team and the organization have moved on.

“Rodgers is ready to take over, and we drafted two good young quarterbacks.”

Is there a conspiracy behind Favre’s possible return? Although it’s not in line with the grassy knoll theory, Janesville’s Ben Vobian believes the Packers have ulterior motives.

“Brett’s our ticket to getting Jason Taylor,” Vobian said of the disgruntled Miami Dolphin defensive end. “If he comes back, which I think he will, I think he brings Taylor with him.”

Although Vobian said the Favre-Taylor package was only wishful thinking, he believes No. 4 is headed back to Green Bay.

“Without a doubt, I think he’ll be back,” Vobian said. “It’s a better team than it was a year ago, and he wants to be a part of it.”

Should he stay or should he go?

The answer is obvious to many Packer fans. If they are right, get ready for another year of No. 4 behind center.

mymaro- Sorry, my friend! Last I knew it was the "TEAM" of the GREEN BAY PACKERS...NOT GREEN BAY FARVE...which is EXACTLY why I've never thought "highly" of him & I take GREAT pleasure watching "Princess Farve" destroy his own legacy!! lol! :) Farve got to where he was (& his RECORDS!) w/ a STRONG TEAM last year, as well as the SUPER BOWL(S)..w/ a STRONG "TEAM"!! I can't "stress" that word TEAM enough it seems. Yeah, we made it to play-offs w/ Farve 11 times (8 on a Wild-Card, 5 times Farve folded on that card! lol! :), but it was always TEAM effort. SEEMS YOU mymaro have a "crush" on Farve, if you CAN'T see what my whole point is.

.
Rodger's is a wimp?! LMAO! Rodger's has had 2 & 2 ONLY!! The 1st, in 06', a broken foot, which he continued to play on despite!! #4 went out @ halftime (They were losing 0-21) from an "elbow" injury from a hard SACK (boohoo!)...How convenient, huh?! BUT, Farve was OK by the next week lol! As he usually is lol! (THANK GOODNESS for fans such as YOURSELF! :) Rodger's foot put him out the rest of 06'. The other was this year. NOW SPEAK OF HURT...Farve's ALWAYS got "something" wrong w/ him!! Especially when he's LOSING!! (or BLOWING a game, I should say, like re: Dallas!) My favorite Farve injury is the whole "thumb" injury he played on way too many years, the dramatic holding/shaking of the hand (even rolled around on the ground once lmao! :) after one of his MANY interceptions!! Funny how he's ALWAYS healthy enough to play the next scheduled game though & get those "records"-lol! Yep, good ol' #4...WHAT A CHAMP he was & is proving himself to be lol! ABSOLUTELY NO JEALOUSY FOR THAT SORT OF MAN!

.
BTW-If you don't like my expressive writing..DON'T READ IT!!..Kinda immature remarks by such a GRAND writer, such as youself LOL!...Wish someday I could be as intelligent as you, too! LMAO! :) :)

They should take back Favre for 1 more season as the starter. Brett can give his salary to Aaron Rodgers and Rodgers can re-sign with the pack after the season, and Favre can either retire again or be traded. I would think Rodgers wouldn't mind that, he'd make more from Brett's salary than he has his whole career. Win-Win!

He should have thought about his actions before he retired. It put the team at a disadvantage when the draft came around. After the season he had and to retire after that was just weird. One play away from going to the super bowl.

Sorry, but Favre's been HOLDING the TEAM back <...WAY TOO LONG!!> since, in my opinion, Holmgren left/our last Super Bowl visits!! I envision ANOTHER GB Super Bowl :) !!!!!(...It's been over 10 yrs. ago now, since the last!! ~ You can call me "impatient" perhaps, but NOT "ASININE"!! ;)...OBVIOUSLY NOT w/ Farve (lol!) taking the team there!! (LET HIM GO PEOPLE!!)

We let him get "HIS" records & hold the "TEAM" of the GREEN BAY PACKERS down...for FAR TOO LONG!!! <..And NOW see how he treats us...;(... Another "team"?! :(...And NO Thompson to blame either!!>

YES, last year went WELL (..until & of course, Farve (lol!) BLEW IT for all, AGAIN!! ;)...but, DUE TO THE WHOLE (the "New & Young"!! :) TEAM!!...NOT just Favre!! (...THEY MADE HIM LOOK GOOD!!! ;)

mayo, I don't suppose the Packers prepared anticipating that Favre would be the quarterback. Yet Rodgers was able to step in and run the game plan relatively effectively. Two different styles of quarterbacks. How many reps you think he had in practice that week? Preparation works both ways. Dallas wasn't the only team to prepare for something different.

I just got back from an emergency stockholders meeting in Green Bay (I own a share so I was invited). The new plan is to trade Favre AND Rodgers to Dallas for Romo. The theory is that we will have a quarterback that doesn’t have to worry about the cost of gas to commute to work and will be able to focus on making the team better. Sounded good to me, so I voted for it.

mymaro: you're giving Rodgers too much credit. That Dallas game: he didn't have a good GAME. A game, to me, is 4 quarters. He had a good 2 quarters. But, then, he got hurt that week in practice and was out for a couple of weeks prompting Green Bay to re-sign Craig Nall (since Brett suffered a "stinger" in the Oakland game; essentially leaving the Packers potentially QB'less since they released 3rd string QB Ingle Martin during the final roster cuts of the preseason.

There's nothing in Favre's contract which says he'll be a Packer until he's done for good. It was implied when he signed the contract that would be a Packer until he is done was because of the length of the contract. There's nothing in his contract that states he can never play for another team.

There have been some famous quarterbacks that finished their careers with teams on not so winning notes. Joe Montana, Steve Young, Warren Moon to name a few. Remember, even the Packers made that mistake to bet the franchise on an aged quaterback (John Hadl). I truly hope Brett does not close out his career on a loser, but he might.
*
Perhaps Momof5, or someone with NFL contract knowledge can enlighten us, but my guess is that a release comes with terms. I suspect those terms include that it will be a cold day in hell (Greenbay) that his release would allow him to play for a divisional rival.

Do not release him. That allows the arrogant egomaniac to go where HE wants with the Packers receiving NO compensation (plus it will probably take him two years to make up his mind where he wants to play).

The Pack should keep him and trade him to where they can get the most for him, hopefully outside the NFC North. This is a business after all. If this is not acceptable to Farve, then let him sit out a year and then he can play for anyone he wants to in 2009. Yes he has given us thrills for 17 years but he has really jerked around this organization for four years now. Time for this to end.

I agree with Aaron Rodgers - get on board or shut up Farve fans - it's time to be a true Packer fan.

Ted Thompson essentially forced Favre out and now that Favre wants to come back Thompson doesn't want him back. Thompson slapped Favre in the face now it's time for Favre to get back at him and have a Superbowl season elsewhere. Of course it could end up like Cris Carter when he left the Vikings to play his last season with Miami because he thought they had the best chance at a Superbowl...Minnesota knocked Miami out of the playoff race by beating them late in the season that year :)

It was only a matter of time before he asked to be released. He knows Thompson doesn't want him there. and to all those who bring up the interceptions: do some simple math and quit making yourselves look like fools. Favres career interception percentage is 3%. SAME as Elway, Marino, Aikman. BETTER than tarkenton, Bradshaw, and Namath to name a few.

His decision to retire came in March, right after football season. His body was sore, we had come so far only to lose etc. I think that right now, Brett Favre is feeling that remorse/regret that we all feel when we want to be doing something, but aren't. Right now, Favre would be training for the upcoming season. He's not. I think that has got to really burn someone who loves the game like he does. I don't know if he'd come back, I'd love to see it, though. But, on the same note, we all have to face the fact that someday Brett Favre has to leave.

So some of you think that Brett is an egomaniac and is selfish. If I recall, how many times in Brett's career with the Packers has he taken a volunteer pay cut to allow the team to get a quality player under the cap on the team? How many times have you seen Brett demand a raise and threaten to quit if he does not get one? Zero times. How many times have you seen Brett strut around acting like he is God's gift to football, none that I have ever seen. In fact Brett was the first one to take the blame when they lost a game. Brett plays football for the love of the sport pure and simple. Football is his life and has been since he was a kid coached by his Father. If Brett was selfish and an egomaniac he would have left the Packers a long time ago and gone to another team.

so many misconceptions and so little time...
.
Let's see here:
1--Despite ESPN being a national media outlet, they are so wrong. Brett won't go to either of those teams (Ravens or Bucs). Why? 5 words. West Coast offense and Superbowl.
2--Brett is under contract until 2011. He even has a clause in his contract, with those in the NFL calling it "historic", that he will always be a Packer. All of this so-called wishy washy-ness is nothing more than a way for the media to muster up more ratings and traffic to their websites. The poor guy barely had street clothes back on following the Giants game and the MEDIA was asking "Brett, are you coming back next year?" Good Lord, people. It's 2008...not 2011.
3--Brett is under contract until 2011. And, as much as Ted "Egomaniac" Thompson wants to prove to the world how great HIS 1st round pick is, he has more sense than to trade Brett to another team. It's as the saying goes: "keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer." Thompson knows that Brett is too much of an unknown. Besides, he'd most likely be the next Jerry Glanville if he did that. Aww, schucks! lol
4--JVLDSS: Yep, he sure did look good out there, didn't he? Especially in that Giants game. Who did the Bears play that week? Vikings? Cowboys? Oh yeah, that's right. THEY DIDN'T!
5--Coffeeman: Well said. Especially the part about Rodgers and his ego.
6--To those of you who STILL think Brett is an egomaniac....May I suggest reading his book, Favre. It is written by him and his mom, Bonita (the cover is black and has a Packer helmet with a silver number 4). If you still think he's an egomaniac, then I question your reading and interpretation skills.
.
McCarthy likes Brett and wants him to play again. Brett wants more seasoned veteran players and has PROVEN he can win. Jason Taylor wants to play on a winning team (something the 'Fins certainly are not).
.
If you paid a lot for tickets to the Vikings/Packers game (aka "retirement ceremony"), you got jipped. Brett won't be in the Class of 2013. More like the Class of 2014. Maybe 2015.
.
Sorry. Gotta go pack now.

WE need Brett for one more year to do the following: Do you remember who the Packers stole in the draft this year? Brian Brohm from Louisville. Everyone says he looks, talks, plays, and acts like Brett Favre of young. We need Brett to come back and teach this kid how to really play the game and then we can say goodbye to the arrogant and egotistical MR. Rogers.

What most folks don't understand is that if Favre comes back, he'll likely come back with a different team. Aaron Rodgers was Ted Thompsons draft pick and Thompson wants nothing more than for Brett to leave and Rodgers to run the show. There are MANY rumors that Thompson essentially pushed Favre out of Green Bay. The odds are higher for Favre to come back and get traded than for Favre to come back and play with the Packers. There are still 2 years on Favre's contract so the Packers and control where he goes, and it for sure won't be to another NFC North team. The 2 teams with the best chance of landing Favre now (according to ESPN) are Baltimore and Tampa Bay.

I thought Favre looked good in purple when he was an old stiff Packercicle in the frigid games against the Bears and Giants last winter.

I want Favre back, No, wait a minute, he should stay retired...unless he wants to play of course...for another team. No, he needs to be a Packer. Ummmm, stay retired. We need him. No we need Rodgers, it is his time. But Favre is/was so great. No, he needs to stay home. Please come back, Brett.

When a hall of fame legend becomes an indecisive, selfish, egomaniac that is a distraction to his entire team and fan base, it is time for Ted Thompson to e-mail Brett: Thanks, but no thanks, BFF."

I hope Favre comes back with Minnesota and hands the Pack two losses before he rides back into the sunset again. Then, when he makes another comeback like so many of these egomaniacs do, I hope he comes back with the Pack and looks like he did his rookie season. That would be sweet.

There will be NO official word from Brett's camp until after July 19th. Being the true class act he is, he is waiting until after the Packers Hall of Fame Class of 2008 is inducted. His good friend Frankie Winters is being inducted and Brett is his presenter. Not wanting to take ANYTHING away from Frankie, Gilbert Brown, or the other inductees, Brett is staying mum until AFTER the induction weekend.

Okay, first of all, I can't believe the Gazette is wasting ink on a story of pure conjecture. That would be like running a story that there might be another week of torrential rainstorms causing more flooding in the near future. Guess what? There are billions of things that "might" happen...where do you draw the line of writing stories about them?

Second of all, I can't believe those of you with your petty bickering about Brett Favre. Either you like him or you don't and, honestly, who cares what you think besides you? That's the great thing about this country, you're allowed to believe what you wish...more power to you.

Third of all, I can't believe the time I've wasted, reading this article (which is not "news"), reading the petty comments of the posters, and writing my own thoughts.

All right momof5, in your first post you say he will be back & now you tell us that you will be on a plane w/Mike tomorrow so maybe you have inside information? Cool, I so hope that Brett will be back for just one more year. We came so close last year, I just couldn't believe it when he announced his retirement.

No doubt Brett was great, but lets face it every team in history that has been at the top eventually must rebuild. Have a good ride with Mcathy cause it still comes down to a rebuilding the road from base up.

mom2marlal: you don't know Brett then if you think that he feels he is the best thing that has ever happened to football. He loves to play the game. It's not about ego, pride or money with Brett. It's about the love of the game. Brett and Deanna are so humble and down to Earth; they have NO idea the impact they have on people. As far as in the early part of the decade and his thumb: perhaps he should have sat out. It's always easier to make the calls sitting on the couch. But, no matter how much Brett stomped his feet and said he could start, if the team docs or the coaching staff felt he would hurt the team and/or himself more then shame on them for letting Brett play. Besides, I don't believe for one second that that was the case. Brett doesn't have the unilatral decision making ability that so many think he has been afforded on Lombardi Avenue. And, before you say "you don't know either." Yes I do. This time tomorrow I will be on a plane with Mike McCarthy.

It will be a mistake for Brett to come back. I love Brett and all he did for Green Bay, but he did retire the right way, on HIS own terms and healthy. If he comes back he could get seriously injured, he always gets hit hard, and he's nearly 40.

Too many players have retired and then come back, look at Reggie White....he should have stayed retired too.

I agree with Ben Vobian from the story. Without Brett, the Packers wouldn't have been able to lure Reggie White from the Eagles....and win Superbowl XXXI. Without Brett, the Packers will not be able to recruit or retain another high profile key player.

They were one player away last year......add Taylor to the mix with Brett at the reigns and I can feel a happy dance in the streets of Tampa on January 31 coming on.....

I can't stand the fact that not only does he think he is the best thing that ever happened to football, but so many 'Packer fans' think the same thing. Even when he was injured and it would have been better for the team if he didn't play a game or two, he thought he was the only one who could get the job done. I am a Packer fan, but I know one person does not make a team. I really hope he stays in retirement and I hope the Packers have a great season w/o him!

tallman: um, ok. All I will say is that you're right. Brett's a has been. He led the YOUNGEST team in the NFL to the NFC Championship game. I know. I know. He threw the interception that "cost" them the game. There were 4 other quarters of football; that game never should have came down to one pass. And, let's not forget that Corey Webster did not run the ball back for any points. The Packers defense "let" the Giants march right down the field into scoring territory. But, yeah, he's a has been. Thanks for the laugh.
.
thkid: that is a very good point. Did you know that there is a photo of #4 from Superbowl XXXI that is called "The Kid"??? :)
.
Rodgers will get more playing time this year, but it won't be as a starter. (But with more playing time, there will also be more time on the DL.).
