McCardell casts spell on Wizards

FORT WAYNE, IND. — Michael McCardell was dialed in here Thursday night in Midwest League baseball.

The hard-throwing McCardell struck out nine and did not allow a run in seven innings to lead the Beloit Snappers to a 6-1 win over the Fort Wayne Wizards.

The win vaulted the Snappers (13-7) into a first-place tie in the second half with the Peoria Chiefs, whose game against the Kane County Cougars was suspended.

The Snappers jumped on the Wizards with two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings. Rene Leveret drove in two runs with a single in the fourth, while Chris Cates and Ben Revere had RBI singles in the fifth.

Beloit’s Ozzie Lewis added an insurance run in the eighth with his fourth home run of the season.

McCardell improved to 6-2. He walked only one and allowed only two hits in seven innings.

The two teams wrap up the three-game series tonight before the Snappers head to Dayton Dragons for a three-game series that starts Saturday.
