— Starting today, Rock County wants residents of the towns of Milton, Fulton, Janesville and Rock to drop off unneeded sandbags at one of four sites. County workers will collect and dispose of the bags in an approved landfill. The sites are:

-- Towns of Fulton and Milton—Rock County highway garage at the northeast corner of Sherman Road and Highway 59 west of the Interstate 90/39 overpass.

-- Town of Janesville—Behind the county public works department, 3715 Newville Road.

-- Town of Rock—Old Airport Road, which is the former access to the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport from the south off Happy Hollow Road.

-- Indianford County Park (east of the Rock River only)—The intersection of County F and County M.

The county asks that users stack bags when they leave them. The sites are open only until Monday, Aug. 18.

Residents and volunteers filled more than 260,000 sandbags throughout Rock County. State and federal laws prohibit permanent deposits of sand or sandbags in shoreland or floodplain areas.

City crews and volunteers this morning started picking up sandbags downtown. Crews also will work Thursday.

Julie Cunningham of the United Way is organizing volunteers to assist with sandbag removal. To sign up, call her at (608) 931-8376. Private property owners who need help removing sandbags should call the city’s flood hotline at (608) 373-6000.

-- Burrwood Park subdivision at the end of South Street.
