— Milton has a new superintendent, and now it will have a new high school principal.

Principal Randy Refsland resigned Wednesday so he could take a job as superintendent of the Waupun School District, said Milton’s new superintendent, Bernie Nikolay.

Nikolay posted the vacancy online Wednesday, advertising statewide.

Looking for a new principal at this time of year is not ideal, Nikolay said.

“We like to do those things in the spring when possible, but you just play the hand that’s dealt to you,” Nikolay said, adding that he doesn’t blame Refsland.

“After four years here, he’d been looking to be a superintendent, and he got the opportunity in Waupun, and I’m really happy for him,” Nikolay said.

Nikolay said he’s forming an interview committee of school staff, parents and students, and he hopes to recommend a candidate to the school board in August.

Nikolay said there probably would be at least two internal candidates.

Refsland has been principal of Milton High since 2004. His last day is July 31 but will take two weeks vacation before he leaves, Nikolay said.

Associate principal Phil Pape will take over some of Refsland’s duties in the interim, Nikolay said.

for the record neither of my kids was or has been in trouble with the school. one had special needs related to an accident and the other had plans that didn't fit the standard schooling. don't make assumptions that the only reason to deal with admin is a bad kid. both are honor students.

I find it funny when these people complain about a school administrator. 95% of parents in the district never have to deal with an administrator because their kids behave and learn in school. The majority of the time when parents have to deal with a school administrator it is because you have raised a bad kid. How about a little parenting instead of sticking up for your punk kid?
